I have been to Atlanta, Colorado, California and Nevada and I have New York and Florida in the pipeline. I want to see more of the real America though, what states (and which cities / towns) do you recommend visiting?

I absolutely loved Golden, Colorado and Littleton, Colorado and Denver, Colorado. Las Vegas is obviously a favourite. California was good as well. Actually, everywhere I have been was great.

Washington DC, Chicago, Boston, San Diego, and San Antonio.

Philadelphia yes, Detroit no. The only time I would recommend Detroit is if you want to see a NFL game. Ford Field is a pretty nice venue. Detroit is a layover at best.

- Rhode Island, Mass and Maine: I really like Maine, some really nice coastal towns, colonial housing, extraordinarily remote hamlets in northern and central Maine. RI is nice too, Newport if you like sailing and incredible mansions etc. I love the Cape too in MA

- Utah: Moab and surrounding area is outrageously nice. A little hippy dippy in the town, and then hardcore mid-west just outside. Arches national park is one of the best outside California IMO

- N/S Carolina: Charleston is well worth a visit, and it you vaguely give a crap about wildlife (birds, sea mammals) then the coast from Charleston northwards is mind blowing. Take a Kayak! Or Ashville is a nice place to start and explore the Appalachians going into Tennessee

- Georgia: I've only been to Savanah, but worth a trip in itself and I hear Atlanta is pretty interesting

- Wyoming: Gran Tetons, beautiful. Plus Wyoming is still the wild west, and just mind blowingly beautiful

- Seattle and Olympia National Park: Seattle is a nice town and the park (looks tiny on the map, but it's about the size of Wales) is really interesting. Surrounding towns are pretty and quiet

Start in LA, rent a car, drive up the coastal highway to north of SanFran, CA (5hrs), then to Portland, Oregon(8hrs), then Seattle, Washington(2hrs), then Bellingham, Washington(1hr), then if you want check it out you can cross over to Vancouver. Or head back to Seattle to fly home. Would be a very casual 3 day drive with limitless scenic views. Stay in the cities for a day or two per time allowed.

Arguably the prettiest 'drive' in the country.

Thanks, I'd probably stretch it into at least a week. I love going for a beer in bars in America, you always get some interesting conversations. I'm a big fan of dive bars.

I like Zed's suggestion, Big Sur is just about the best drive on the (northern) continent, and you should definitely take your time. If you go to SF, let me know, there is a lot to see there and I'll give you a couple of 'you can't miss this' areas to go to.

Big Sur is great, I was staying in SF a few years back and got a helicopter down the coast to Monterey just to go and have lunch at the Post Ranch Inn, the food and view was amazing and I highly recommend it!

One of the best places not mentioned is Key West. It's fairly cheap there, and there is never a lack of bars and restaurants to visit. Renting a scooter and driving around town is a blast. The only thing it doesn't have are the beautiful, sandy beaches that the Gulf Coast is so renowned for. If you ever decide to head to Florida send me a message and I can point you to all the right destinations.

THIS! I have done Vancouver to Portland a few times. Lots of great beer in Vancouver, Seattle and Portland. Make sure you drive through Astoria and take their bridge, its pretty neat. I do know there is a train that goes from Portland up to Vancouver, that could be an option.

In Portland, you MUST go to Tugboat Brewery and have some Chernobyl Stout.

I am pretty sure he has already been to LA, which should preclude him from staying there. The drive up the coast between LA and SF, however, is what he should not miss. Hell, if he really wanted to trick it up, he could start in San Diego, cross over into mexico for an afternoon stay the night back in SD, next day drive to SF spend night, look for a bed and breakfast halfway between SF and Portland, then Portland for night, Seattle for a night and Vancouver for a night with a day left to divvy how he chose.

6 cities, 3 countries, all comfortably doable within a week by car.

I have been to LA, and to be honest I quite liked it as an experience. Very clean, everyone dressed like they are in the OC. Don't think I could live there though.

LA's biggest problem is its traffic. It would be a manageable place to live if every 15 mile trip didn't take an hour.
