It's just guessing and making suggestions, based on information you have provided. You don't have to connect with them.
They were all people that I know.

I assume that that uploaded their contacts when they signed up, and I was one of them.

I'll rephrase: It's just guessing and making suggestions, based on information people have provided. You don't have to connect with them.

it can be useful if you are self employed; every time i finish a project, if the client is on linkedin i'll request a testimonial. which sometimes does help to get projects.

the linkedin page like most other soc. networking profile pages can rank quite well in google, too.

expect random friend requests from people stating they know you, etc. annoying. i switch all the notifications off for every social networking site i use for that reason.

As someone who uses the endorsements quite often when recruiting a supplier or staff member I'd say that I tend to ignore ones from friends. In fact, too many from friends makes me suspicious. Sometimes it actually helps your career to turn down an endorsement. I look for recommendations from people who were directly managed by, or directly managed the prospective candidate.

The only point of this post is to give you some insight as to how a prospective employer might view your profile. It's worth checking that clients have added you as a supplier rather than a friend (a lot of people do that when they are in a hurry).

I got my current job through LinkedIn :)

Quvwcxqx 04-23-2012 11:23 PM

I use it so I get offered jobs, simple as that.. agencies use it, therefore you have more chance of being offered an interview/job info. Do it.

I cannot state enough how important and effective LinkedIn is these days, both for job-hunters, and recruiters / companies looking to hire. It certainly is not social networking in disguise. Its a very well used and highly effective professional networking tool.

Folks,

I am looking into expanding my career/academic path and am wondering if LinkedIn is a decent venue. I have always viewed it as social networking in disguise but a few of my colleagues believe that it is stronger than that.

For those of you that are members, has this ever hurt or helped you in your career path?

I feel that I have a decent reputation with past professors and co-workers and was hoping that I could leverage some of those relationships into more opprotunities.

So, what do you think? I am currently not involved in any of the major social networks (unless this is considered one http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/tongue1.gif) so this would be a first for me across the board.
I use it, and many of my colleagues past and present use it too. I take it pretty seriously.

boanuatiguali 04-25-2012 06:36 AM

I get about an invite a day, and instantly put them in my spam folder. I'm assuming I should probably take LinkedIn more seriously.

fedordzen 04-27-2012 11:40 PM

I use it as well, as do most people in my industry.

...and I will never join tw@tter or facebook.

I think Linkedin works. One you've set it up, your profile is up there and it's up to you to connect to other people and accept invitations.

Headhunters roam a lot and check out profiles constantly. I just draw the line when it comes to personal information. Haven't uploaded any of it. I keep this as a strict business platform and for that, it's really good.

Let me state: Joining LinkedIn was not a mistake.

Thanks for motivating me.

I disagree. Not only did I laugh, but so will the 95% of other FM readers that don't pay much attention to you.

aaaaaaaabbbby 08-17-2012 11:17 PM

Why would they pay attention to me? And why are you being nasty?
