When Japan defeated America to win the 2011 Women’s Soccer World Cup, American fans flooded social media sites with racist comments, making “Japs” and “Pearl Harbor” trending topics on Twitter.


If you thought that kind of behavior was limited to the frustration of defeat, think again. America beat Japan 2-1 last night at the Olympics, and some fans were as racist and hateful in victory as they were in defeat. As noted by Fox News, International Business Times, and SB Nation, the same trends emerged. There were many tweets celebrating the defeat of the “Japs” as payback for “Pearl Habor.” Numerous users also gloated about the victory by comparing it to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

I am always amused when the US is considered a racist country. The US is the most diversified country in the world, no one even comes close. Europe is mostly white, Canada too. That we have racial problems is a direct effect of so many cultures/races mixing. That they (anyone else) doesn't, is directly related to how limited outside cultures are within their cultures. Other countries point to one main city as diversified. In the US it is pretty much everywhere. (except idaho, iowa and the 2 dakota's)


As to Japan, i'd imagine the slurs have a lot more to do with ww2 than any real racial bias. The thing is, had it been a match between China and Japan, what would have been said then between the fans would make what the americans said look like child's play.

My guess is the only thing most Americans know about Japan is that we dropped atomic bombs on them in WWII. That's probably all they remember from school and know about the country.

I'm not sure where you live, but Canada is certainly not 'mostly white', and I'm assuming you mean white as in descendants of the UK.

I am not sure how much you know about Canada, but it isn't much. I mean white, as in decedents of Europe. Surprise, 80+% European origin. Them is called white people. 80% coming from one continent does not equal a very diverse makeup.

I'm not taking sides at all here but just want people to know this.

I lived in Japan for over 3 years teaching English at elementary level. I had friends who worked in a Junior High (and I got to work in one a few times), in which a Japanese teacher teaches English with a native speaker to help with pronunciation.
In one section of the text book they're taught about Hiroshima - remember this is an English class with some poor American, British, Australian, New Zealander, South African (whoever it may be) having to teach this to the children about how they (the children don't really know the difference between native speakers of English) committed this act against their country.

This isn't History but English and nothing is mentioned about why this happened.
