Default I hate insurance companies
Seriously.

Not only do they hide critical clauses deep in their T&C in order to avoid paying out when you make a claim, but they actually swindle you on the quoting process.

Example 1: paid for £10'000 cover for valuables for years. 1 claim, and they settle it with £5500 based on the fact I was underinsured (common practice, so they claim - nowhere in the quoting process do they refer to the fact you HAVE to insure the full amount of your valuables or else they don't pay up).

Example 2: during the quoting process they ask you to list all valuables worth more than £1500. Once done, they show the sum of these items. When you get to the last (recap) page, that amount has mysteriously been cut by 15%!!!

I think that's despicable business practice.
You're paying these f*ckers to insure your stuff, you give them a freaking ton of info about you, your house, the size of your dick and the name of your dogs' mother and they still blatantly try to screw you.

It might be who you are insuring with rather than the business as a whole. I have had 2 claims in the last 3 years and they paid out readily both times. I didn't have receipts or proof of ownership on either occasion, they just had my word for it.

Then again i do use a 'premium' company and pay slightly more for the cover.

I hate them also! Pay for car insurance, they ask the value of the car and then say you will only get market value if you make a claim so you then have to buy more insurance to cover the difference from market value to new value. Such a scam!
Another thing with my car insurance is they wanted to charge me 200 quid more a year to park in my secure garage rather than in the driveway.

Then home insurance, had a water leak from a pipe in a wall that cause around 25k worth of damage, its been over 4 years now and still the insurance has not paid out. How they can get away with this stuff is crazy.

Who are you with? My contents insurance is with Legal and General. It's a bit more expensive than you can get but I've heard good things although never had to claim.

Oh yes. "Premium Companies".
As soon as you have one claim in history because you got robbed by some douche, they mysteriously disappear from all internet quoting engines.

By the way, the company that didn't pay up was Hiscox, and the one who's automatically reducing the cover amount in the quote is Liverpool Victoria.

I was originally with a company called Sesame Insure for my first claim and then moved to Towergate where i had my second claim (Moved as premium has increased). I think these are both underwritten by Royal Sun Aliance.

These 2 companies were both recommended to me by my financial advisor.

Mine just tells me to stop spending money. I only see him once a year though, which is enough for both of us.

Insurance companies are corrupt and will do anything they can to not pay a claim. They are run just like the mob.

And speaking of "premium" companies, Theres a premium company here called State Farm and if you have a car accident they will drop you because they only want grade A drivers....a buddy of mine got into a fender bender, his car was a BMW at the time, and they dropped him pretty much right after his claim....such a scam

The hassle of proving a claim and douchebags not caring for stuff and therefore claiming more are the reason I try to keep my insurance coverage low and rather keep a healthy bank account for minor damages

I had bother with Hiscox too when claiming for a £5k bike that went for a walk. The loss adjusters comment was "who has a 5 grand bike?". Me, obviously, since I have the receipt and have insured it for that you penis. I had also over-insured my contents and valuables at the time since I was renting and they had a minimum cover level, but I had to fight them tooth and nail for a full pay-out.

I've been with Aviva for buildings and contents for a couple of years now. I originally ported my Hiscox policy and upped it to buildings too, but the equivalent Aviva cover is about half the price I was paying for contents before my claim. I haven't made a claim with them yet though so can't comment on this process.

Just did a quote on their site and they are twice the price of what I pay now, even before I add on any high value items!

With all due respect folks, if you are complaining about that... you have never dealt with health insurance in the US.

Story:

I severely blew my knee and rushed to the ER. I got X-rays immediately and needed to get an MRI. My insurance would not cover an MRI at this particular hospital so I had to get them done at one across town.

Problem was, once I checked out of ER, I was no longer an emergency patient and had to schedule an MRI as a normal patient... took three days. Delayed my surgery almost a full week... and it still cost me over 5k USD out of pocket (after insurance).

Hence why we made a big song and dance about the NHS in the olympic opening ceremony. We know it's not perfect and it sure as hell isn't instant but at least you don't come out with thousands in medical expenses.

I know.

Waiting for the vehicle assessor to come and check my car before I can fix it, after some **** hit me from behind and destroyed my right mudguard and screwed the wheel alignment.

I'm not expecting him any time soon.

Aviva.
They do price for the business they want (as do most insurance companies). I pay something around £280pa for £100k contents plus £15k specified items and buildings cover/rebuild costs (4 bed detached with double garage in Surrey), including over 5 years no claims. That's pretty competitive from the quotes I've had from elsewhere, though haven't tried a broker.

There might be a reduction for the missus having her car insurance with them too but I can't see it being that big a reduction.

That's good.
I can't seem to get anything under well over a grand for 85K contents (+15K specific items) for 3bed terraced in London. The claim I filed in April (as one f*cker from the removal company basically robbed us of approx 19K worth of jewelry) in combination with the location (Islington) seems to blow everything out of proportion...

I got one broker on the case at the moment. He's supposed to call me back, we'll see what he comes up with. I have a few other options (the AA, as they cover my building insurance, Adrian Flux because they were good back then when I needed specialist car insurance for the ROUSH, and maybe Natwest as I have a staff Advantage Gold account). Anyway I'm not expecting anything serious under 1 - 1.5K/year.

Yep, ya lucky bastards. And I hear some people in your country are complaining about the NHS! Unbelievable. Come visit the US and get injured sometime, I dare you.
