How I am I NOT in this movie?! It has all the elements that are central to a Nicholas Cage movie. 1) It exists. 2) All the dialogue is either whispered or screamed. 3) Everything and everyone is on fire!
he was asked to play a role in LOTR but he turned it down

I'm generally well attuned to the latest internet memes, but I admit, this Nick Cage one escapes me.

I wasn't aware Facebook put a gun to your head forcing you to join or upload compromising pictures from your vacation.
How could they when Amazon has them locked in a basement?

So they made 3 movies out of three very very long books.
And now Hobbit is 3 movies even though you can read it in one sit.

okay...

Actually the lord of the rings was one book, its just been split into 3 parts over the years, possibly to increase revenue for the publishers,or to make it more digestible to readers.

as for the films, its a business model, I'm going to wait for all the films to come out, I'm not wasting 14 quid a pop to watch a strategically produced 3 part film based on a single book, like I did with LOTR.

anyway whens he gonna sort out the Dam busters movie the **** been waiting for it to be released.... I have history with 617 sqn, I'm an ex modern day Bumduster

OHP is right, it's all about revenue.

I feel sorry for the poor bastards working on it though... 48FPS and its 3D ... 96 Frames a second to work on for the poor guys at WETA Digital. They will be busting their arses trying to get this film finished on time, now they have another 2 to do.

There's a whole lot of not-reading-the-link syndrome being displayed here. They aren't just turning The Hobbit into 3 separate movies, they're incorporating material from other Tolkien books like the appendices and The Silmarillion. Telling the whole story, explaining what Gandalf is doing when he disappears while they're in mirkwood, things like that.
I know a lot of people that have read The Hobbit and the LOTR trilogy, but almost nobody that's gone through the extra material, so I'm really looking forward to experiencing some new Tolkien lore. In 48 FPS delicious 3D. *drool*

Don't get too excited by the 48fps thing... it's most likely going to make it worse than better.

There's no way in hell that they could use any stuff from Silmarillion. It's totally different timeline.
I can't remember any appendix of the Hobbit though. May have to check the book (we have them all in the shelve) and see what's in it.

Ah just goes to show you that I haven't read it. Anyways, point is that they're incorporating material from outside the books.

Meh, I could be wrong too. It's been years since the last time I read the books.
I tried to start it few months ago again but only managed to read Fellowship of The Ring...
I moved to re-read Hyperion series and enjoyed it a lot more. (it's hell of a lot lighter... )

they're probably still faffing around trying to decide if they can give the dog it's correct name - actually it's an example of PC crap gone bonkers and isn't really that funny. However, as the Americans have a long history of revisionist history in their movies (and elsewhere), that may not be a problem - just call it whitey...

It was 3 parts since the release. Not over the years. But the reason is maybe 100% accurate.

The Lord of the Rings (not the Hobbit) has a huge section for appendices in the later releases of the book, I believe these are what Ruz speaks of. My particular version has:
  • Annals of the Kings and Rulers
  • The Tale of Years
  • Family Tree
  • Calendar
  • Writing and Spelling
  • Languages and People
All of that comprises the last ~20% of the book. It is substantial material.
It was 3 parts since the release.
Not exactly correct, the novel was released in three parts, only months apart. But it is, in fact a single novel, this is an excerpt from my book explaining that:

"...The Lord of the Rings is often erroneously called a trilogy, when it is in fact, a single novel, consisting of six books plus appendices, sometimes published in three volumes."
