I didn't say they should use apple. I said traditionally they do. That is a fact that cannot be disputed!

You're still not thinking about this at all.

Back in the 80's the Apple Mac was the de facto creative tool, and that has stuck with them. These days a lot of creatives use PC's as well, but the majority of design departments want Apple and nothing else.

Stop trying to shoot the messenger. All I am doing is passing on facts.
This maybe true for other industries like architecture and general design work, but not for film.

Good point. The last place I worked at that touched on film used Avid exclusively for that part of the process. They created overlays on the mac though.

I have yet to see OSX being used in any of the companies I've worked for here in Finland. It's always Windows for workstations and Linux or Windows for servers. Probably due to everybody, their grandparents and kids all being used to Windows. Why force people to learn another operating system when they can start working right away in a familiar environment?

Each OS has its positives and negatives for specific users. It is true that linux users need a strong team of support staff that know it inside out, but the results can be extremely good if done properly.
Indeed. Linux is such a swiss army knife so to speak, as a tool it can be customised and tailored for specific tasks like nothing else. You can make it as blunt or as sharp as you want.

But yeah, without proper support it's difficult to recommend to everyone.

At my place (local aviation company) we run SME Server 8.0 servers (CentOS based) that run Apache web, and Samba 3 domain accounts/shares. The desktops are a broad mix of Windows, Macs & Ubuntu, with plenty of Androids & iPads thrown in for good measure.

Have you ever worked for a design agency?

Our Editorial team have AVID on some macs... but also use Linux workstations.

No-one is saying anything about forcing people to use certain OS's. It is unlikely smaller companies would ever use anything like Linux, due to the level of specialised support needed.

.
I am so out of touch! I'm sure when I was involved you needed a dedicated AVID workstation?? I did smoke a lot of pot at that job though.

OK, OK. I get it.
Get what?
Have you ever worked for a design agency?
I never got this, what exactly makes a Mac superior to a PC for designing things? I get that it might have certain exclusive programs that make it preferable, but surely so does the PC? And most likely there are suitable counterparts for both on either platform?
So it has to come back to usability then, and...

No, it comes down to personal preference. Also for my company and the producers / production team who go on set etc and meet with clients it is for a professional look. All our production and CEO's, MD's etc use them on the ground floor of our main building and it is the first thing clients see. It does look very professional and clean, in a loose sense of the word...

Currently nothing really. Back in the day, when the current generation of designers were learning their craft Adobe Photoshop was miles better on the Mac.

Yeah, that's why the reputation stuck.

A lot of designers nowadays prefer windows machines because they can be configured faster and much cheaper than the apple counterparts.

My brother is doing a digital art degree which includes art, design and 3D.

Every idiot in the class is rushing out to buy macs because some equally idiotic lecturer is claiming that they are significantly better to use Photoshop with and to design on.

I like macs and appreciate them but these idiots think they are instantly going to become superb graphic designers just cos they just plonked 2000 euros on a macbook.

If you're into video then Final Cut Pro is a good enough reason to buy a Mac on its own.

Designers loved the platform back then because the PowerPC architecture at the time was superior, performance wise, with applications that supported SIMD thanks to the AltiVec instruction set. Many SIMD supporting apps were multimedia applications. I mean changing the brightness in photoshop was improved by the SIMD instruction set from AltiVec on a PowerPC chip.

Problem is this previous history has stuck with Apple and now that they are on x86 that edge is gone. Now it is really based on preference and if your app only supports OSX or windows.

Yep. If it wasn't for Macromedia and Gates Apple would have bit the dust.

Then Apple try and screw Adobe. Really love Apple's attitude.

This reminds me of something I've been wanting to post for a while.

I find the new iPad very frustrating at times. Don't get me wrong, it's a great little gadget. However, a few things have actually annoyed me over time:

- lack of USB
- Safari browser is weak. Often doesn't display pages properly (especially if there are forms to fill in)
- Lack of support for printing over anything other than airprint compatible devices is just retarded
- the options to browse the appstore are few and too generic
- I haven't tried to sync anything yet with any other device but I'm pretty sure that anything other than iTunes probably won't be supported
- ...

I'd love to be proven wrong, but that's what I've been experiencing after about 3 months' use.

PS: I am a Windows user. Never had any Apple product except for an old iPod Shuffle and this new iPad.
Ah yes, how could I forget...

- no flash.

Think about it though...For what you use your iPad for, when has that ever been a problem?

If you need it, fair enough. But including something for the sake of it is no benefit to anyone. The only (and I do mean only) time I have wanted flash is to watch something on megavideo.

Now that's a bogus excuse. Many news sites have imbedded flash based videos. Much of the web streaming content is flash based. I'm really not looking for them to make a point here.
