Higgs boson rumours

Anyone been paying attention to the rumours about the Higgs boson possibly being found at 4/5 sigma?

If true its pretty exciting, I wonder what kind of rate of technological advancement it would bring. Learning how to manipulate the mass of objects creating new ways of energy generation and propulsion!

It was all true and this could be the beginning!

I hope something significant happens in my lifetime. I want to be able to tell "back in my day" stories about how we used to have to drive places, and our ipods only held 15,000,000 songs.

So did you guys watch the live feed?!

ATLAS scientist now up.

nikolapegayyyaasss 07-04-2012 04:48 PM

Very exciting! They have a 5 sigma signal at around 125-126 GeV which is 99.99999% a new Boson!

Still some more testing to confirm if it is the Higgs Boson but damn this is big!

Best to check out the CERN website if anyone is interested in more info http://public.web.cern.ch/public/

Cern twitter is also great place to check watch going on.

Awesome cakes!

So next we wait for full power of LHC. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...s/excited1.gifhttp://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ies/blink1.gif

Higgs boson walks into church. Priest says "Sorry but we don't allow particles in here." Boson says "But without me, how can you have mass?"

aburva.org 07-04-2012 07:11 PM

Sweet!

PowerArmour, that's why it's called the 'God' particle!

Brareevor 07-04-2012 07:14 PM

I wish the media would stop saying God particle, makes people think its not real.

Herimoisige 07-04-2012 07:52 PM

I'm more concerned about it being the other way round http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ies/laugh1.gif

I wouldn't say that.

But it is hard to overcome the word God as it is meaning "everything". What synomin can they use for a new particle that is boss to the Higgs-boson when they discover it in future?

This thread reminded me of a very funny episode of BBT, where Sheldon tries to explain the higgs-boson theory with pictionary.
