I'd say Rocky is a masterpiece, when you consider Sly wrote, starred and directed it. Rocky 1 and 2 are brilliant movies.
You haven't seen too many films, have you ?

Plenty, and i've learned to enjoy films regardless of others elitist preconceptions about them.

I don't have any elitist preconceptions. I enjoy films regardless as well, judged upon their respective criteria.

My response must have sounded harsh but I get tired of people proclaiming Rocky to be one of the best films ever.

Is it a very good film ? Definitely. Even a great film, but a masterpiece, c'mon !

Anyway, I'll take you up on the claim.

Haven't seen the film in years, I'll get it on bluray and watch it again.

Also, Sly didn't direct it, he came up with the story and starred.

You're entitled to your opinion, as am i, and the others you've heard proclaim the same.

You're right, he directed the others, but not the first. I would say watch it again, i can appreciate the film more now i'm older. What i like is that it feels more like a fly on the wall documentary, Stallone gives an outstanding performance, hugely underrated and manages to bring to life one of the most beloved underdogs in the history of film making. I believe all actors have that one special part, a part that no-one else could play as well as them, Rocky was Stallones, in fact, he was so good at it, that the "dumb boxer" stigma has followed him around ever since.

I love to hear different opinions as long the person explains the opinion, like above. Cheers

He got the stigma because he relentlessly kept on releasing crap sequels to his first two films.

It's his own fault.

Same goes for his Rambo series.

I'm not going to fault him for realising what he's good at, and then taking advantage of it. Some actors are more versatile than others, Dustin Hoffman for example, with films like Kramer Vs Kramer, Tootsie and Rain Man stretching his abilities, he's obviously in a different league to Stallone. But think about this, could he have played characters like Rocky or Rambo as well as Stallone? Not a chance. Some parts may not stretch ones vocabulary, but they can be just as poignant as playing Hamlet.

Fassbender would have rocked those roles.

Especially if he showed his penis.

Don't really believe in personal top lists and that bullshit but I'll gladly entertain your question.

I'll list 5 favourite films that I feel that are really up there but in no order.

Sergio Leone's The Good the Bad and the Ugly

Ridley Scott's Blade Runner

Federico Fellini's 8 1/2

Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window

Julio Medem's Los amantes del círculo polar

I just went through the films that I have seen and chose 5 random exceptional ones which share their place in my heart along with a probably another hundred masterpieces.
