I can't see CDs vanishing, like vinyl they will still be around.

been a long time, but I'm fairly sure it was Dire Straits, Brothers in Arms. I also had it on vinyl and (4 track) cassette.

Vinyl is still around because it is an analogue format and a lot of people like the sound it produces. CD will be eventually be wiped out because it's a digital medium, the same as all the other digital mediums. Except for taking up a lot of space that is. I imagine it will only be a few years before the CD player is no longer produced.

CDs are still better quality than mp3 though (depending on what you listen to them on). I can see many major labels stopping CDs at some point though I agree. Most of todays mainstream music is so poor it doesn't really matter if you only get a low bit rate mp3. Sure, they are, but the point isn't the compression rate is better. That is easily changed with lossless files. The point is that people will always look for ways to store the same information in a smaller space.
