I'm currently sat in the King's Cross First Class Lounge. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...s/biggrin1.gif

Someone's sat near me who sounds like they're from Newcastle.

I'm actually thinking of going to York...again. I've already been 3 times in the past 12 months. I might book it while I'm away on my iPad.

You should really consider some European travel. There are so many beautiful cities out there to visit...off the top of my head...

Prague, Krakow, Barcelona, Rome, Venice, Budapest, Valencia, Paris, Dublin and Madrid....I have either been to them or a close relative has (so trustworthy opinions).

Maybe. I wouldn't mind visiting Rome. I'd have to renew my passport. I got one about 11 years ago and never used it! It was for a trip to France with a mate, but that fell through.

There's so much in this country to see! http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...s/biggrin1.gif

There is, but it's nothing compared to experiencing other cultures. If you don't want to fly, take the tunnel to France and a train to wherever.

I've no problem flying. I've done it loads of times; but a long time ago.

I did want to visit Egypt, but things seem a bit unstable over there ATM.

I'm on the train using their WiFi now, and just about to enjoy the complimentary food and drink. :)

You have nothing to worry about near the tourist areas. When I went, apart from road blocks with police and big guns, you'd never have known they were under military rule. It's also really cheap due to shark attacks and political unrest.

It's always a bit unstable in Egypt. What do you expect when you put men, camels and 45c heat together for prolonged periods of time?

If you go, fly to the pyramids, don't take the bus from Sharm.

If you grew up in Nottingham then nowhere is going to look rough.

Newcastle isn't rough per se, but you get a lot of stag parties that are up for a bit of a ruck at the end of the night.
my step son works in idols bar and he never seems to have any issues in town , he usually rolls in at 3-6am

hes been mugged twice but both times outside of the city centre when he was walking home after work

Went to the Baltic today. It was a bit disappointing tbh, especially compared to Tate Modern (in which I could, and have, spend several hours in). There were literally just 2 exhibits to see, and one being installed that you could view from a balcony. The lot could have barely filled one wing of one floor at the Tate. Disappointing for such a large building.

Oh, and I did enjoy the view from the viewing gallery. I waited to see the bridge open. It was supposed to happen at 4.05. Come that time, and nothing. I waited and waited, and still nothing, so I went downstairs.

Barcelona is nice, Krakow looks nice but is somewhat spoilt by how extortionate the prices are compared to the rest of Poland ( Warsaw excepted ).
Going to Madrid in September for a weekend break http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/cool1.gif Hope it's a nice as I've heard.

Fair point, but it's still cheap. I've been there about ten times now and have never felt ripped off.

Oh don't get me wrong it's cheap by UK standards, but 2 to 3 times the price of other Polish towns. A large beer in Katowice is 4 - 5 zloty in Krakow I paid 12 zloty for the same.

Now when visiting I make sure I stick to the non tourist restaurants.

gymnAnemoe 06-22-2012 04:47 AM

Oh, and I found the way they refer to their staff as a "crew" a bit irritating tbh. They're an art gallery not a ship.

Sounds like you went to a tourist trap. I usually pay 8 zloty in krakow or 10 on the square.

UK tourist towns bump up the prices as well. Can't really blame them, it's a captive market.

Don't get irritated, Bungle, you're not at home. Things, people, culture are different. That's why you went away in the first place, wasn't it? Don't expect to find the Tate in Newcastle... because you are in Newcastle. Open your mind a bit! http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/wink1.gif

Stuff like that doesn't bother me. Being asked what my name is by overly familiar shop assistants in America irritates me though.

And the Tate Modern is disappointing compared to MoMA, Centre Pompidou, Guggenheim: Bilbao, New York and Venice. Just to put it in perspective.

I haven't been to all of them, but if you weren't such a negative person you'd realise that they are different, not disappointing.
