I had to do some IT at the bank too and to my surprise people that are not much older than me had no idea how to copy a file into a folder.. I mean seriously??? I got quite frustrated having to explain every single step, sometimes forgetting one because it should be so obvious.

What is it with techies! Could you do their job without any training? I doubt it. So why are you judging them for not being able to work a computer? Sure, copy and paste is pretty basic and most of it will be laziness, but some people just don't get computers or technology. Deal with it.

If they can't perform basic operations, they probably shouldn't be doing it.

Engage brain then speak...there are more jobs out there that don't require computer skills than those that do.

yes, but they're using the computers daily. I'm not really a techie either, I just figure common sense should sometimes be used. Most of the time they just don't want to learn it and then say it's too difficult.

People have enough to do at work without learning new skills they don't need.

It's like them asking you to learn the rules of the stock exchange while you fix their PC. You'd say no thanks, that sounds boring.

If they're asking for help, obviously they do need those skills.

Take your own advice: Engage brain then speak...

That's idiotic. Have you never had to ask someone how to do something at the office? Does that mean you need to learn that skill? Of course not. Get a grip man.I have to ask our design team to do things for me from time to time. Maybe I need a photoshop course? Or maybe I should stick to my own remit? There are far too many people around that spend their time sticking their noses into everything other than what their own job entails. Are you one of those people?

I agree. A basic GNVQ in computing that you can learn in 3 hours should not be a requirement to use a PC. I'm shocked people know how to use a mouse, or do you accept people who use PCs should not know even the simplest of basics?

I accept that people all have jobs to do in the office, and as long as they are good at them it doesn't really matter what else you think they should know.

Some people are lazy, some use things so infrequently they have forgotten the next time they want it, and some just can't get their head around computer operating systems.

Bankers jobs are to make the company money (or lose it). I.T support's job is to facilitate that. If you don't want to spend your life dealing with "stupid" requests then you need to change career.

I see your point dangermoose, but when I write a 5 page summary on how to copy and paste a file into a folder with screenshots and everything and they still don't get it, then it's surprising to say the least.

In all honesty, people probably don't read it. A five page document is a bit daunting.

You could condense that into about 10 lines of text. How about a company wiki?

For copy and paste?

Right click on file.
Click copy.
Go to new folder.
Right click and select paste.
Rinse and repeat.

I designed a new app here at work. The entire thing is extremely simple and self explanatory. They had a trainer write a 12 page 1600 word count document with screenshots detailing every little tiny step. I know that I'm going to get questions on how to use it.

I don't see how people can be so computer illiterate. Computers are part of every day life, and people should be familiar with them. It's like driving a car, or changing the tv channel. You should know these things, and be able to figure them out, because it's just so basic.

Edit: Amazingly enough some of the more computer savvy people are the 50 year old women here at work. I've also walked my grandmother through troubleshooting her PC, and she's 70. I dunno what these younger people's excuse is.

Arrogance mainly. A lot of people in sales, marketing, banking etc see I.T as below them and a job for nerds. The attributes that make people good at sales generally don't make for a very good person overall unfortunately.

not knowing basic computer tasks at this day and age is same as being illiterate IMO. if you have the opportunity to learn there is no excuse for not knowing it..
