If you hate your club pro, then no matter how good he is at teaching, your predisposition will probably take away from you getting the most that you can from the lessons.

When I was looking for lessons I looked for a coach who I could understand easily, and someone who understood me easily. I don't explain things too well, so having someone who understands what I say when I'm explaining it from my side of the ball is a blessing. I'm really happy with my coach I have now.

No point wasting money, especially when I'm not exactly rolling in it..

Thats what I was thinking, I would probably be angry with him helping me..

That would probably be the guy I get on well with, definitely not my club pro, but as I've said I've heard he is not a good teacher, especially on short game which I need the most...

After these replies I think I am limited to go on the advice of my friend and go with the guy I don't know as at least I might be able to go in there with an open mind and really listen to him?...

I would do the latter then and go with who you were suggested. An open mind would definitely help.

I think that might be the way to go aswell, I feel a prior personal relationship could act as a hindrence when looking for professional help

Shane my first question is this, why do you HATE you club pro? Did he wrong you in some way?

My gut would be to go see your third option. Word of mouth is always good. Your personal relationship with the pro in the store will get in the way of really improving. The club pro may be the best but like you said you can't stand him. So going with a guy that is new, fresh and recommended is your best option. Good luck which ever route you choose

He just allways comes across as really smug and obnoxious. He is also very rude to junior golfers (of which I am one) and also doesn't care much for female golfers... So basically he is only nice if you are a low handicapped man...

But yes I think that is my best bet and it is also the one I have decided to take... I am just hoping not to be told everything possible is wrong with my swing and I need to start from scratch, as no one with any real knowladge has ever looked in detail at my swing.

I think you are going to have to get along with the person first so don't go to someone you hate.

You may try a few different ones just to see who works the best with you. Lots of people change teachers, so it's not out of the ordinary. Good luck with the process and looking forward to hearing about your progress.

Thanks man, I think I am going to book one for some time early next week Tuesday or Wednesday maybe so I will post the results...

Might even put up a video of my swing and see if people say the same thing he does.. could be a bit of fun

The worst thing you can do going into a lesson is thinking negatives. Open your mind and listen to what he has to say. If he is worth a salt he will do the same. A good pro will always ask questions to see where your head is and your level of golf knowledge. A good banter and understanding of what you are trying to achieve is key. Good luck!

You might try just going for an evaluation. See how you get along. A lot of the relationship between student and teacher is the way the teacher talks to his student. I've had 3 different pros and the one I have now I consider the best because I got to talk to him a little before we started lessons.

Like a few others have said , check the ego at the door , and go into it with a very open mind .
I went to a GolfTec Swing Evaluation last Tuesday , and got my EYES opened wide after seeing my swing on video . I had the impression of not wanting to have my swing changed as I golfed my ball around the course pretty decent and people said I had a nice swing .
Well now I know I have a couple of swing faults and see where I need to improve , this only made me want to change my swing for the better !

I have no problem with changes/alterations I'm just hoping that I don't need a overhawl, allthough I don't think I should..

+1 for checking ego at the door. If you're not going to take what the pros tell you, you're wasting your time and $. I do know how you feel re: smug pros though, we have a few around here. Fortunately the one at my local course is really nice. We also have a few teaching pros and assistant pros who give lessons as well and their prices aren't as high either. I've taken lessons from an AP before and it really helped me out.

I'd say go with the guy your friend recommended. You'll walk in with an open mind (good thing) and be a little more willing to try what he's asking you to do (another good thing).
Relax & enjoy, it's just a game after all.

Sorry haven't updated, was busy the last week...

Well I actually ended up going to none of the 3 and went to a old family friend who I thought had retired due to injury, but we got talking he said he was back touring and working very hard on his game and he said he could sort my game out no problem...

So I went and well have no posture apparently.. so we were only working on that, then I go back to him tomorrow..

I was happy though as he took a good approach to it videoed my swing then showed me everything on the iPad and also showed me frame by frame of pros of similar stature to me and compared swings..

He did all of the technical lines and stuff you see on tv and to be honest what he said made a lot of sense...

He then just gave me a few basic pointers and that took up most of the lesson, I played the next day in a tournament but didn't want to try too much too soon so just kept my normal swing for the most part and played an average round...

I then practiced what he said on Sunday and it felt a little uncomfortable but got more natural as it went on...

I quite like the coach himself as we get on and I seem to like his approach to the teaching..

Tomorrow I think we are following on with the same and then finishing with some short game...

Will update after

Your friend has recommended him for a reason? I usually find people who are good at what they do get work from word of mouth id say go with the recommended pro.

I was planning on doing that, but he is spending a lot of time travelling Europe promoting some new putting gizmo...

So I felt it was better to have someone constant to start off with rather than seeing the guy I wanted once every couple of months
