Chipping technique - putting stroke or hinge and hold?
Been using the hinge and hold for the last year (watched a Phil Mickelson lesson on Youtube) and been getting some pretty good results. Even managed to chip in a couple of times from the edge of the green. However very recently I have tried out chipping using the much simpler putting stroke method and I reckon the results are slightly better and a little more consistent.
What is your preferred technique for chipping (I refer to bump and run shots not pitching)? |
I use hinge and hold and I make sure I use as least loft as possible to make the shot. I find that the less loft I am able to use the less chance I have for a crap shot.
|
I've used both, the hinge & the putting stroke, right now I'm using the putting stoke technique... for me it seems to be more consistent... still working on my distances right now. Also, last week I decided to start playing more bump & runs, I always just tried to fly the ball to the hole on my chips & pitches.

I use my putting grip and stroke with the ball slightly back.
|
I just grab a club and swing and pray that I don't chunk it or skull it.....

i also chip the same way in hawks video. really has worked out well for me over the last year of chipping this way.

I use an 8 iron, keep my hands way in front of the ball, and use a putting stroke to keep it as low as possible.
Of course if there is an object in the way, I could be in trouble ;) I have never mastered the art of the quarter-wedge. |
I also chip like Hawk's video, I get great results with this technique!
|
Putting technique. I've tried a method in the past wherein the arms rotate around, and the forearms rotate, similar to a natural swing, and it worked very well! I just never had time to work on it enough to get it down...

Same as the video. Easiest most straight forward approach to chipping.
|
I use the putting stroke for bump and run shots. Hinge and hold for everything else.
|
I do more of a hinge and hold, but the nice thing for me is I always use the same grip no matter what shot I'm doing, from driving to putting!

Putting stroke for chipping from the fringe or fairway, IF the distance is not that long (say....15 yards or less) AND if it is not uphill. I typically use a pitching wedge or 9 iron for these. Will go with gap wedge, 54* or 60* if I need to get the ball over something, or I need a really soft landing (tight pin placements).
Something like a hinge & hold for all other close-in situations where I'm taking less than 1/2 a swing. Really starting to love my CG15 wedges (54* & 60*) for these shots. |
Putting stroke. I find that its simpler, easier to repeat and much more consistent. Im not a fan of the hinge and hold because it can sometimes expose the leading edge of the club and cause you to chunk it. The bounce is your friend. Use it.

I try to use the same stroke and will pull a different lofted club for distance change needed. |

Putting stroke for virtually every shot, but that's simplifying the technique too much. Rotation + bounce is what it is.
