Bridgestone Ball Fitting Video

I apologize in advance for the crappy video. This was a spur of the moment decision when I got out to the course and saw that he wasn't very busy. I took this on my iphone and I have no idea how to edit it in iMovie. You might need to adjust your volume when Mike is talking for a bit.

Here are the numbers on the paper from the fitting:

Hex Black:

Clubhead Speed: 109.8
Ball Speed: 154.7
Launch Angle: 12.3
Backspin: 1103
Side Spin: -833
Carry: 246

I hit a little bit too much of a draw on that one but for comparison sake, I put exactly the same swing on the Bridgestone ball and it had more acceptable draw spin numbers.

Bridgestone B330

Clubhead Speed: 109.8
Ball Speed: 154.8
Launch Angle: 14.0
Backspin: 1255
Side Spin: -380
Carry: 263

All in all it was pretty cool.

I played the B330 this afternoon and was very happy with that ball.

Were those numbers you typed right? I couldnt make it out on the sheet in the video. Backspin is just over 1000?

sleelverrex 08-20-2012 04:02 PM

I had really low back spin when I was on the monitor as well. Interested to see what you have to say about that.

Low like around 1000? With the driver?

DumErrory 08-20-2012 04:08 PM

I'm hoping those are 21 and 22 typos for spin. I've never heard of anything that low before. The ball would probably just fall or knuckle right out of the sky.

CatLuvkaLover 08-20-2012 04:12 PM

Yeah...

I need to go again and see if it was the machine or my swing since that was in the thick of my driver swing issues a few months ago.. I hit hybrids on the machine and was seeing spin around 3500 so I'm assuming it measures it correctly.

P.S. sorry for thread jack, I can move this somewhere else

Pwy9egVW 08-20-2012 04:14 PM

You need to have them look at that again. Seeing backspin of 36 (usually a topped ball) and even 550 means something is not accurate. Now keep in mind, that is a simulator and not a launch monitor, but something is still a little off.

Bobdilan 08-20-2012 04:15 PM

I will go in this week and get it measured again, it did seem odd.

avaiftBoara 08-20-2012 05:35 PM

The numbers are correct. Those are the back spin numbers the launch monitor gave me.

This gives me my only gripe about the system. It would have been much better to not have to hit into the net. That way we could have seen actual ball flight to see if they were usable drives.

The Bridgestone Launch Monitors are very accurate. Based on the fact that you took multiple swings and the spin is what it is, I am not sure it would have mattered to watch the ball flight personally. The idea behind it is for the fitter to see what is happening and they can definitely see that.

Im just curious if you have ever been fit for your clubs? You have to be leaving a ton of carry distance on the table.

I was fit for irons earlier in the year. I haven't done a proper driver fitting. There is a middle line on the printout with the ideal numbers based on clubhead speed. For backspin it shows 2328 as ideal for 109.8 mph and that carry distance should be 284. So according to that, I am losing 20-25 yards in carry distance with the low backspin.

Perhaps also of note - I was hitting the shots totally cold. Walked on to the range and maybe warmed up with 5 or 6 range balls. Then hit only two shots with the hex black and two with the B330 so it is certainly possible that the numbers are off a bit. Given that we were going to to the little video, I didn't want to take up too much of their time.

Based on the performance of the ball in the afternoon round, I will say that I was very impressed with the B330. It has really nice feel and I was getting some great drives with it as well as some nice approach and greenside action.

That is my complaint as well. I'd like to see the numbers of competing balls when I hit my good drives, the ones that are high and straight and get a lot of roll. Sometimes you can tell hitting in a net, sometimes not. Either way, you only get 3-4 swings to find out. I don't really care what the numbers would be when I hit a bad drive, I'd like to compare the balls when I hit the good drives I hit on the course.

So you expect to hit new golf balls into oblivion, no net? Who goes to get them?

I would expect the option to hit MY golfball into oblivion to get at least some good starting numbers to work with.

Peertantyb 08-20-2012 08:18 PM

Not to thread jack. He said the B330 was the softer ball. Is this just in comparrison to the hex black or is the RX higher compression than the b330. I thought it was the other way around.

It is a comparison to the Hex Black.

And nobody would stop you from doing so. However when you step into a fitting put on by someone, it is up to them how they will conduct it.

In all honesty, I have never understood the fascination with seeing one's ball flight. Maybe its just me, but I have yet to find a golfer that with their driver could not tell if they hit it well or not. I guess everybody is different.

I agree with this. I can feel when I catch it off the heel/toe, I can tell when I pull one or come over the top and slice the heck out of it, but those times I catch it on the center with a good swing, I know it

Kolovorotkes 08-20-2012 08:43 PM

Good job on the video!

I don't disagree as I can tell the difference between a sweet strike and a not-so-sweet strike. I can't say that the shots done on their launch monitor were 100% perfect but however they may have been "off", they were consistent from swing to swing so the data itself is properly represented.
