Firm Wrists
I play with a 2 handicap who has almost no wrist cock (ala Steve Stricker) and hardly takes the club back more than 3/4. He can bust 280 drives right down the middle all day long and usually hits between 12 and 14 greens. I've always used more of relaxed crack the whip wrist action but it seems I can no longer rely on it to consistently return the club to the ball properly. I'm just curious as to how firm most of you keep your wrists throughout the swing. Thanks for your thoughts.

I try to keep a firm left (leading) wrist all the way through my swing, of course I will be 65 in a few months and cannot hit the ball out of my shadow. Hope this helps you in some way.

I've never seen video of my swing, but in my mind I try for about 90 degrees. So I picked firm.
|
I said relaxed, but who knows. I do hinge my wrists in my swing.
|
I think I hold them pretty firm but I do hinge my wrists during my swing too make sure I'm "ringing the bell" instead of casting.
|
i voted relaxed only b/c i just keep a flat, yet bending left wrist past 90 at the top and def more as it comes down and through...
|
I do hinge but i like to be relaxed

Mine is firm, but I either pronate or supinate it (could never figure out which is which) like DJ does with his left wrist in the backswing, it's a new habit that happened in the last year and I hate it. I would like to get back to a relaxed left wrist similar to Hogan.

I'm like you Trout, I have a slight bow in my left wrist through out my swing. But my angles are held until the point of release.
Everyone or at least 90% of the golfers should have an angle of some sort held through out the swing. Very few playing with the cast but hold the angles until point of impact. |
Cocked and loaded. The more lag the better.

This is an area that probably got the most work out of me, is the wrist cock at the top, and keeping it loose so it fires low in the downswing. However, I also know that I never bend more than 90 degrees.

I am playing with a more firm left wrist than in the past, but still plenty of wrist cock. I am attempting to keep that wrist flat or even slightly bowed and then holding that angle through impact.
I have always had fairly loose wrists, but I was opening the clubface as I "over-cocked" my wrists. So far the change has been really positive and I'm hitting the ball with a tighter, more consistent, and powerful action. I'm hitting the ball further than I ever have, too. "Relax.....take it easy......WHAT'S YOUR HURRY!?!" (bonus points if you know where this quote comes from)

I have, unfortunately, a handsy swing. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn,t. I have never seen my swing on video so I,m assuming cocked and loaded. Thats how it feels anyway. Love trying to get lag as much as I can.

Relaxed but with plenty of lag

My first.source for wild drives is a right wrist collapse at the top. If I let it collapse, I hit huge drives, but who knows where they are going. My #1 key is a solid right wrist at the top. If I hit that.point, I know cal go after it going down.

My misses are pretty typical, I get out of rhythm by swinging too hard at the top instead of smooth acceleration which causes the club head to get in front of the hands through the ball causing short irons to flare left, high, and short. In other words, I let the wrists be too loose and flip the clubhead.
On good shots, my wrist cock is minimal but necessary for me. Slow back and accelerate through the ball, (never jump at it.) My thought is to hit through with firm wrist and get the hands through the hitting zone in front of the clubhead. When I do it right, the wrists do fire but after hands are past the ball, I don't think about release it is going to happen. Which leads to my "other" misses. When I have good rhythm, try to hit it hard, and think about releasing the club head I get a long hook. Hands get through ahead of the club but the ball explodes long, right and hooking. Keys for me: Good rhythm, minimal wrist cock, keep hands ahead of club. Problems arise when I get to try to hit hard instead of accelerate or think try to hit hard and release the club. By the way, if you struggle hitting out of bermuda rough, you probably are flipping the club. (and hitting your next shot out of rough again) I have lots of uh, er, experience with these shots. http://www.thehackersparadise.com/fo...s/struggle.png |
