Ok, so I got out for the second time this year yesterday. Normally, I like to go to the course by myself the first couple of times out and practice, just to see how my swing feels and how I'm striking the ball. Some of my friends aren't like this. I told my buddy last week I'd be going out on a day he couldn't make it. He suggests I call some long lost guy from our old team that belongs to the club whom I don't even like. Then I realize again some people do not golf alone. Hello, I like it.
Last week was pathetic. First two balls in the water. Then some scuffs, followed by comprehensive pull-slices. It's a good time to experiment, so this week I do that. I remember reading countless magazine/book articles about picking a spot a few feet in front of your ball to help with aiming, kinda like a mark or arrow on the lane in bowling. I typically skipped over those articles, leafing through to the page that would actually reveal the true secret to the golf swing. But this really helped. I found myself squaring up to that little line between the mark I'd picked out and the ball, and my swing felt freerer and longer. I think I was more square to the intended ball path. It seemed as if I was I was setting up open, but the ball went straight and long when I hit it correctly. Winter/early spring golf is misleading, but I hit it to places closer to the green on par 4's I'd never been before. I think before I had been trying to square up to a target hundreds of yards away, and was really triangulating to it, causing a pull or slice. So anyway, I'm hopeful. Just like every new year. ![]() |

I've been picking a spot ever since I read a book by Nicklaus eons ago. I also do it when I putt. "A certain part of the fairway or green"? So that's how you single digits operate. Golf My Way, by Nicklaus? I read it, too. Beautiful watercolor pictures in the book. I had no idea how good he was then. I was just starting (about 1987) and was hitting balls I'd colored into the field in back of our house. Hoped our golden retriever would bring them back, but she was more interested in gophers. |

I tried it putting, also. I'm not as worried about putting, but it holds promise there as well. Stands to reason. If the pin's on the left I try to be center-right in the fairway and visa versa. There are a few holes at my home course where it's necessary to be in a certain portion of the fairway to go at the pin. 2 of them you need to be on the right and that's where ob is. As far as aiming at portions of the green I just think it helps me concentrate better. If the flag's left I aim just to the right of it in case I pull it and you know you don't want to short side yourself if you miss. Some days things are feeling good and I just go right at every damn pin. Sooner or later it bites me in the ass. |
