i had my lesson with my pro yesterday we talked through what i was worrying about and we looked at my swing. He showed me where i was going wrong on video and we put it right and he showed me what he wanted to work on. he cut my lesson in half and said work on it this week and we will look again on saturday just had 1/2 hour and the difference is immense. Im feeling better and should of just spoke to him more in depth sooner.

I'm surprised your pro doesn't give you specific goals. If not make your own. During each practice session set a goal to focus on. This way you better parts of your game each time out!

I can recommend a great teacher under 2 hours away from ya. He's south of Manchester.
http://danwhittakergolf.com/ youtube.com/dfw1500 I've been doing some online lessons with him and plan on working with him in Dallas next time he comes this way. He has a good eye, explains the swing well and works with many tour players. Since you're just starting it would be a good time to get in with a good teacher instead of wasting money, effort and the main thing being time. |
Just like to update this and say thanks to the guys who took time to offer advice.
Shortly after posting this i decided to look over what i had achieved since playing golf and who had helped me and how. When I first started playing i had lessons with a pro named Simon he moulded my swing and helped me break 80 twice in the first 7 months of taking up the sport. I then though i knew it all and stopped the lessons and played ok for a few months and when things started going wrong they went wrong! So i went to have a couple of lessons Simon wasnt around he was on holiday so i had a lesson with another pro. With in 5 minutes he had me hitting the ball further than i ever had and was feeling good again. Then i had a few months off for other reasons when i started playing again this year my swing was in tatters and i went back to the second pro and was expecting him to fix me quickly. The lessons left me feeling worse and like nothing was going to work. It was at this point i was looking at other drastic measures and at this time i posted this thread. A couple of days later i was up the range working on things when my original pro Simon stood watching me (with out me knowing) and said jesus whats happened to you! and he picked the moment as i was almost in tears ready to give up. Well i have had a few lessons with Simon again and put my trust back in his hands and although im not 100% there yet still making a few mistakes my swing is in total transition and looking like a solid swing again. Since having lessons with Simon I have carded 3 rounds of 75,78,81 had my first 2 ever eagles and finally enjoying golf again. Sorry for being long winded but i have found it hard to participate on the forum or even talk golf whilst going through what for me was a torrid time but im on my way back and will be posting more again. Once again thanks for the help and kind words from the great THPers |

Might be a strange coincidence but my pro was telling me he had the same problem with a guy. Drives were going about 180-200 low and left when the pro looked at the driver there was a tiny crack where the sole meets the face plate, which was leading to a loss of compression.
Might be worth trying to hit the same driver in store and see what happens !!! |
what to do next?
Im in bits with my swing i dont know which way to turn. Im thinking of breaking ties with the pro i have been working with as i get no drills to work on but when we work 1 on 1 he gets me hitting it great but when he is not there im all over the place. Im seriously thinking of going with a pro who works for himself not a company and going for a 10 week course and total rebuild what do you think?
I love playing golf but im losing the will at the minute i played last Thursday and shot 108 which is my worst score since last January 2 months after i started playing. |
At this point my friend, you need to ask your pro for more practice drills that you can do on your own. You need to relax about your bad rounds. You have to stop getting frustrated when you don't pull off the shots that you see on TV. Your swing will never be perfect. All you can do is build on the successes. Build good successes with your setup. And if you shot turns out bad, then so what you were setup right. After the setup is fixed, work on your takeaway. If the shot doesn't turn out right, so what you had a good takeaway and setup. Then work on your transition at the top of your swing. If the shot turns out bad, so what you had a good transition, takeaway, and setup. Then work on your impact position. If your shot doesn't turn out well, so what you had a good impact position, a good transition at the top, a good takeaway, and good setup. If you work on everything and you keep shooting high numbers, who cares. You're not feeding your family with your golf scores.
Remember, it could be worse. You could be dead. |

Since you are having success when you are with your instructor, I am going to go out on a limb here and suggest you have to start practicing the mental side of your game when you are not with your instructor. I personally think this requires as much practice as the mechanics of the swing.
You have to separate the thinking part from the execution part. So go the the range and work on:
This sounds simple, and kind of silly, but it can make a huge difference in your on-course performance. It actually takes a lot of discipline to practice this way. BTW, this is an ultra-distilled, highly simplified summary of what I got out of reading Dr. Bob Rotella's "Golf is Not a Game of Perfect", which I recommend. |

As you probably know, when taking a string of lessons, it's expected that your swing will be worse before getting better. That time period depends on how much you practice correctly and how often. With that being said, if your swing right now is a huge mix of many different ideas, going to another instructor won't "cure" you right away. Might take another month or so of high scores before you get another swing down.If your current instructor doesn't give drills, try remembering what he works on with you during lessons and try to recreate it in front of mirrors/video cameras.

this has been going on for a few months to the point i dont know what to do. All i want is a repeatable swing and i got a mash up of 3 lol

Feeling better today just spoke to my pro he said that things are going well were fixing what's wrong and to be patient and it will come. He's seeing me Monday but suggested I get a few range sessions in working on what we have been.

What's the longest club your comfortable with off the tee at the moment ? The reason I ask is lets say you solid with a hybrid off the tee, just use your hybrid and that way you can build confidence in your game. This then gives you a chance to work with your pro on your woods and driver.
Have your woods and driver been fit for you ? |
No takeaway sorted and hips are back to where they was before working. Im no longer flat at the top either. Im spending hours trying to get things sorted my backswing looks solid again and im starting more with the hips.
