In a couple of weeks my job is sending me too some training in Germany at the MTU plant. At the tail end of the training course I plan on taking some leave and traveling around a bit with one of the other guys I work with. We're both golfers, I of course am a little more obsessed then he is and am stoked to be going to Germany. Any who I looked up flights and it's only $250 roundtrip from Germany to Scotland. So I am definitely going! Now I need help with which courses to play that have good deals. I know this time of year there's a lot of daylight and some of the better deals are to play in the afternoon. I know Carnoustie has a good 2 course deal and Turnberry has a good deal after 3pm. Of course I will try my shot at the ballot system for The Old Course. We're also looking at staying at hostels because it's a lot cheaper then a hotel.Any who, thanks in advance for the help!

Tough to know where to start
![]() I enjoy the Turnberry courses more than the Carnoustie ones, and they really are at different ends of the country. But, Carnoustie is a lot closer to the sort of area you'll probably be looking at spending time around. St Andrews is a bit of a trip from Turnberry. Of course there are plenty of options around St Andrews even if you don't make the ballot. You can turn up and wait (although this would probably require a 3/4am start to the wait and you might not get out together), but there are lots of other great courses around. The New course is very good, you have Kingsbarns if you're feeling rich, the Castle course (won best new course in the world a few years back if I remember correctly). That's just the more famous ones. There are many nice 'local' courses in that area too. Accommodation in St Andrews can be pretty scarce and pricey, so I'd maybe check out the surrounding area for guest houses, hostels and even caravan parks. I've never used this website but might be a good start - http://www.stayinstandrews.com/ Wherever you choose to base yourself, there will be plenty of options. Hope this helps for a start. |

About 20 years ago, I had the pleasure of playing golf in Scotland a few times. Believe it or not, I just walked up to the starter at the Old Course and got on. I was paired with a couple from Texas.
I have also played the New Course and Jubilee Course, but the Old Course was the best one at St. Andrews. There are so many fine golf courses in Scotland, not just the famous ones. My favorite golf course was a place called Dunbar. It is a links course along the Firth of Forth. It is used as an Open qualifier. http://www.golfeastlothian.com/golf-...asp?course=DUN It is a private club, but in Scotland you can play at private clubs (or at least you could back then). I played on a Tuesday, IIRC. Another course I enjoyed was Alyth http://www.alythgolfclub.co.uk/index.html |
