Default The Stinger
Getting the ball in play off the tee is my achilles heel. I need a "go to" shot that can consistently put the ball out 200 yards or so on narrowish tee shots without a needed carry. Today I went to my local prictice facility and practiced hitting the stinger using 5 iron, 3 wood, 4 hybrid, and even driver. I was having great success. I am keeping my excitement reserved though because I am a total range player; I can hit 90% near perfect shots on the range only to suck on the course.

Do any of you use the stinger as a go to shot on firm fairways? How to you play it?

I am not sure if I can hit a stinger, but I can flight the ball quite low when needed.

Seriously though, this was a shot that I had great success with last year when testing the Boccieri Heavy 3 Wood. I was able to keep it quite low with a nice quick swing, and was seeing about 215-220 yards, all line drive height. I loved hitting that shot, but find it easier to do with the shorter hybrids and long irons.

I can't hit the stinger for crap. They end up with too much spin and balloon way up. I just go for a long iron off the tee if I need it safe.

I hit a stinger when the trees are really thick or I'm in some crazy situations, I use my mashie and hit a low shot and it really keeps me out of trouble.

Hmm, I must have just been having a "lucky" range session because you guys are 10x better than I and I was having fun hitting it with different clubs and getting pretty consistent results. I just played it with a slightly open stance, 1/2-3/4 backswing, focused on getting extra lag on the downswing and holding my hands through toward the target line with an abbreviated finish. I hope I can duplicate my results again and consistently.

In HS when I carried a 2 iron, I hit this shot a ton off the tee. Used to kill it, and used it sometimes as a go-to on par 5's to get it up close.

Ball in the middle of the stance, hit it like any knockdown with a shallow attack, and I always felt like I was bowing my left wrist...almost like I wanted to hit the ball on the upswing a tad to give it as much top spin as possible with my club "rolling off the top of the ball". You don't actually want to hit it on the upswing obviously, that was just my mental feeling. I always tried to minimize any hand action through the impact zone and really extended flat (low to the ground) down the line as far as I could.

I'd appreciate the general type of swing required to hit it. I have trouble hitting anything low as I tend to hit every club very high.

Start putting the ball back in your stance? Focus on driving to your left in the downswing perhaps. This is tough to say without seeing/knowing your swing.

A few good stingers and a few bad ones with my 2-iron before a links tournament two years ago.

It's not really a stinger but I hit my 3 wood really low even off the tee. Way lower than my driver which comes in handy on windy days. Going against the wind I'll use my 3 wood and with the wind I'll use my driver

I just can't get the low-spin part down. There was a section about Tigger's stinger in Haney's book and it was interesting to hear about how Tigger struggled so much to learn it. But now he's darn near perfected it.

Or 3 wood. I just don't understand how you can hit a low trajectory, low spin shot. Lol.

I don't either, he's just a crazy golfer. I can play a low fade but that's all.

I don't get what's so confusing about a low trajectory, low spin shot? That's usually how it goes - a low trajectory spins less. A draw would spin less to boot.

I guess doing what the article said is a good way to start things off: keep the triangle, ball back 2 inches, hit short and low 50-yard running hooks with a short finish to get the feel for it.

I guess that makes since since higher flight means more spin I guess.

That's true, but when I think of lower flight, I usually think of steeper angle of attack since that lowers launch angle, but it makes it spin like crazy.
