Default Fairway Woods
I currently have a knock off 3W (I think it is an Adams clone) and a hybrid in my bag. My dad offered to buy me a 5W for my birthday.

My question is how do I pick? Do I go with something similar to my driver (Taylor Made Burner) so the weights and swings are similar? Can I just go with anything? I've never owned a 5W and my 3W was just given to me and I hit it swell.

I would get one that says 5W on it. That is the kind I have.

whats the difference in yardage between you 3W and your 3 iron.? Are you trying to achieve a shot in yards between the two? Or, do you have a particular shot you don't have club for?

what degree loft is your 3W?

don't have a 3I, but my 4I is about 180-185. Not sure about the loft of my 3W off the top of my head. I have a hybrid that I have a hard time hitting consistently that I can get 200-210 out of. I guess my 3W can get 250 yds off the ground.

Thats pretty good yardage.. I was going to recommend a hybrid.. hmm But since you don't seem to like it, I would say:

just go with 17-20 degree 5w that closely matches your 3W, (assuming your 3 would is ~ 15 degree.) Find one with 'rails' on the bottom so it will help you out of deep grass as well.

or, if you are good with your 4 iron, I would get a 3 iron that matches your irons.

The other options is (if you are a stickler about staying within the 14 club rule,) is not getting a wood at all. You don't really have an unmanageable yardage gap between your 3w and 4iron. so get another wedge. One cannot carry enough wedges imo.

I may be overestimating my distance on my 3W.

I could live with that. Maybe I can see if I can get a 3W instead and then I can buy myself a 3I. I have been murdering my 4I lately.

Most people do. You said 250, so I'll bet it's more like 220-225.

probably...the driving range I am using to gauge it is pretty terrible.

I'm gonna go to Dicks and see what they have at least.

I would suggest a 5W similar to the 3W that you currently have in your bag. Otherwise, your yardages could be out of synch.

eh, my 3W is out of date. It's an Alpha

I would rather get a new 3W and find a matching 5W at some point up the road

250 off the ground? that has to be the highest shot ever. you take that height and turn it into length you could probably win one of those long drive contests.

off the ground meaning hitting from the fairway.

Like I said, probably a bad estimate.

I was looking at them. Those fuckers are expensive! I need to ask what the cost limit my dad is setting for the present.
