Default Practice Drills and Swing Thoughts
I'm in the process of reworking my iron game. Its been getting progressively worse over the past few months, and I'm hooking it more than ever. Last week at the range it was as bad as it's ever been, I was shan*** everything or barely getting it off the ground. Odd thing was, for the most part my fairway metals and driver were as good as they are typically.

I'm kind of at a lost point, in that I'm just not feeling comfortable at all over the ball with the irons.

So what are some of your favorite drills to work on the basics? How about swing thoughts?

Since my driver/fairway metal game is usually pretty good, I thought I'd offer my swing thoughts. For both of them I'm thinking "go sloooow on the back swing, and start slow on the downswing, get parallel to ground, and whip the club through, extending down the line, and finishing over the front foot so you can pick up your back foot"

I don't know what is causing your problem so this isn't meant to be a fix, but to answer your question...

My problem is often take away, swing plane and cupping my left wrist. My drill is to hold a club well down on the shaft and slowly take the club back. At something approaching 90* I check to make sure the butt of the club is angled toward the ball and my wrist is flat. From there, swing down and follow through.

When you are on the course don't try to analyze and fix your swing. It just gets worse... Fix it at the range , in lessons whatever. When you get to the course go with what you got.

As for a swing thought - the target. Where do you want the ball to go? Your brain can't think about a swing thought and the target at the same time so if I had my choice I would think about a target.

Everyone struggles for different reasons and lessons are truly the easiest fix.. but, I was hitting driver, hybrids, and wedges well and irons HORRIBLY a week ago. My one fix I did that was a game changer for my irons was standing about ball width or two further back from the ball in my stance.. I was too compact with my swing I think before doing that..

Everyone is different but other than lessons this may be a solution?

Try and work the butt end of your grip around your hip and stop rolling over so much. Speaking to a professional would definitely help.
