Default Putting
I've always wondered how people line up and what they look for when setting up. If you have a 10 foot putt and see 3 to 4 inches of break, do you line up and aim 3 to 4 inches left of the hole or pick a spot just in front of your ball and let the speed of the ball do the rest?

This might sound silly, but I visualize a line the ball will travel on like in the Tiger Woods PGA Tour video games. I draw a line on my golf balls, so I line that up with the visualized line. If I hit the putt the correct speed, it will go in.

I also try to visualize the line. It helps with my alignment and speed.

I always use the alignment aid on the ball. I mark my ball and read the line. I point that line down my line. Pick up my marker. I never take a practice stroke. I just line up my putt and address my ball. I make a final check of my RST. I then start my stroke. I do everything I can to focus on hitting the ball with the middle of the putter face. I never look up until after I have hit the ball.

Draw line on ball and aim it to where I want it to start off (in your case, 3-4 inches right of hole). Use alignment line on putter to line up to line on ball and just get it started down the line. I have really had good success with this method. I feel all sorts of lost trying to just visualize the putt without any true alignment.

Not silly at all. That's exactly what I do as well!

I too visualize the line of the putt, but I always point my ball at the spot I'm aiming at. Thanks to the SeeMore triangulator I saw that I was a couple inches off of what my original target was... now I'm darn close and like I said, point my ball to where I am aiming. It would be hard for me to "address" the ball if the aiming line is pointing at the hole, while my putter and alignment aides on the putter are pointing at a target a foot or so left.

I have a tool that lets me put an alignment line on my ball. I use that to line up my putts before every putt that is longer than 1 foot. I read the putt, line the line up with where I feel I need to hit it (on the line, that is) and then I just go on feel for the speed.

So do you line up the ball's arrow 4 inches right of the hole if that is what you are reading?

Thats what I do too. After I mark my ball, I line it up with my line.

Doesn't every ball on the market already have an aide on them? I only use an identification mark, I trust the line that's already there.

Correct. I'll line up the line I put on the ball so it starts on my visualized line, which would start 4 inches right of the hole. After that, speed is everything.

Sort of a combination of what everyone has said...I aim the alignment aid/text on the side of the ball along the intended target line. I will often pick an intermediate target, a few inches in front of the ball, along my intended line, just for confirmation. I stand behind the ball, looking down the line for 1-2 practice strokes, just for speed, then step up and hit it.

For me it's the break that I concern myself with. I imagine the ball rolling into the break and how the ball will break at which speed. I always try to line my ball up and I focus on my follow through through the imaginary line.

Tapatalkin' this mutha.

Same here! Nothing better than "Tiger Vision" hahah!! Speed is everything for me. If it breaks too soon, i didnt hit it hard enough, breaks too late, i hit it too hard.

I cannot, for the life of me, pick something out just in front of my ball and putt consistantly. I have a black line on my ball and 90% of the time I point it at a point left or right of the hole. If its a double breaker or a long (40 foot) sweeping putt then I might aim at somthing just past the half way point between my ball and the hole.

I just use the alignment aid on the ball and line it up with the break.

True story. In south Louisiana its humid and foggy most mornings. Was playing one time in a "all birdies pay" game. It was about 7:30 am. I was 20 feet from the hole putting for birdie and my friend was about 35 feet on the same line. I marked 1 to the left. He made his for birdie! When I went to mark my ball back I noticed a dew line on the green going right to the center of the hole. I replaced my ball on its original spot and it was right on the dew line LOL just like Tiger Woods on xbox. I hit my putt and it hardly left the line and went in!! Everyone on in our group was laughing about it for 3 holes. Hope thats not considered cheating lol.

After determining the amount of break to play, I decide which direction the ball should start rolling. Align the putting line in the direction I want the ball to start rolling then try to hit a straight putt with good rhythm. Let gravity and grain do it's job and turn it into the hole.
