I've been told it depends on how your brain works. For some it's best to pick a spot on the way to the hole, for others to visualize the line and just roll it. My daughter's coach has a little test he runs. He claims he can tell what type of putter you are by watching how you look at a putt and how you roll the ball.
Unfortunately, I can't remember how the test works. lol. Kevin |

I faithfully drew a line on my ball and used it to putt for years and years. It evolved to where I feel it made me too mechanical. This year I decided to let athletic ability and feel take over on the greens. Now I read the putt from behind the ball, pick a target a few feet in front of the ball and go. Many times I won't even mark the ball first. You wouldn't believe how many more putts I've holed of all lengths. Best putting I've ever done, by far.

Also felt like adding this just in case anyone else wanted to give it a shot. I usually like to read my putts from behind the hole first, usually looking for the best point of entry for the ball. Then I take that line to a certain spot, and when reading my putt from behind the ball, try and read the line to get me to that spot.

I visualize the ball rolling into the hole. I use the alignment aids and aim that line down my intended path.
Pick a spot a few inches ahead of ball and plan n rolling the ball over that when next to the ball at address. On my practice strokes I imagine rolling the ball to a point behind the hole, and I envision the ball rolling into the cup, even the sound it'll make when it drops. (a method taken from zen putting) When the practice swing feels good, step up and hit, don't think at this point, let the mind roll it. |

I've always wondered how people line up and what they look for when setting up. If you have a 10 foot putt and see 3 to 4 inches of break, do you line up and aim 3 to 4 inches left of the hole or pick a spot just in front of your ball and let the speed of the ball do the rest? |

I'm a spot putter. I find a spot halfway to the hole and figure out what I would do if the ball was at that spot. I want the ball to have the same speed at my spot as it would if I were putting from there. I line up the ball to the spot and go. |
