In match play, if you hit out of turn your competitor can make you re-hit (without penalty).

Apparently its illegal to gently nudge your ball out from behind a tree with your foot. This makes golf so much harder.

This coming season I'll be getting back into competitive golf, I didn't feel as I would be good enough, and this year I feel ready. I have been on USGAs site and quizing myself so I remember the rules and such so I don't take strokes on easy stuff so I came to you THP. I figured why not get everyone to add a rule or two that I(or everyone) should know and it can be about anything from showing up late to a tee time(which I believe is a two stroke penalty) to 14 clubs in the bag.

Anything would help as I just need a refresher- Especially on lost balls and the different colored stakes and when another ball should be dropped and where.

You can clean your ball after marking it. You can also shout during your opponent's swing, and probably should.

Many tournaments are played under the "One ball" rule. This means you can only use one brand and line of balls during the round.

Make sure you know the rules related to the red and yellow stakes. This can really save you a stroke or two in some situations. For example, if you have hit your shot into either a water hazard (yellow) or a lateral water hazard (red), you have options on where you can drop the ball if you are not playing from the hazard. Of course, this costs you one stroke for the drop, but you have options on where you drop it. Most folks are familiar with the 2 club length rule for red stakes, but this may leave you dropping the ball in some really deep stuff or almost unplayable terrain. You have the option for either colored stakes to drop the ball on a straight line that is drawn between the flagstick and the first point of entry into the hazard. When you draw this imaginary line from the flagstick back across the entry point, you can continue that line further away from the flagstick as far as you want to go. This choice obviously will cause you to drop the ball further away from the flagstick but it very likely could give you a drop into a much more desirable lie, potentially the fairway. This may allow you to hit a better shot onto the green and make the putt since you were able to hit from a better lie.
