Hello THP,

Been lurking a long time and decided it was time to jump in.

I have a question regarding consistency; How common is it for scores to be all over the map? One round its a 82, then a 86, then a 78 then a 92.

Some info about me:
I started about a year before High School and played all 4 years at my school. I continued playing for a few years after I graduated. During that time I was fairly consistent shooting from a 78-82. Then, life got in the way and I went 2 years without touching a club. Recently I have gotten some free time and decided to pick it back up. After a few range sessions I felt pretty good and just started playing. I have kept track of my rounds on oobgolf and right now I am ranging from a 78 to a 93, with scores all in that range.

I know I cant always have my "A" game, but should it vary by the hole? Will the consistency come with more practice?
I guess my main question is, what should/could the score range be?

It happens to me also...low 90s then a few above 100...somedays you tell the ball where to go...other days the ball tells you where to go.

I really think it is all about practice and playing consistently. For me it is like I forget how to swing the club if I don't play 3 days a week. I was shooting in the low 80's and then the rain hit. Now I am shooting in the mid 90's.

Looks like it is going to be nice for the next week. I'm hoping to get the score back down.

The more I play the lower my scores go. But I've had a nice run in the past 20 or so rounds were I'm right around 78 which I'm happy with in the winter/cooler months. But I'd say my scores are very consistent.

My scores are all over the place at times! It's very common.

For sure!!! We generally play 2 man best ball during the week, and my partner is a +1...and I've seen him shoot an 82, and then a 69 the next day. Even the guys that are pretty good, have some awful days. They just tend to minimize those days more than some of us.

I am currently in Northern California so I was not there for it. We are getting one right now out here. They never get thunderstorms out here. The weather out here was beautiful all winter and now that spring has sprung it has rained rained rained. Looking forward to a good week coming up. Where do you play in SF?

I like to think that sort of inconsistency is the precursor to getting consistently better. You're showing that you can shoot the lower scores, and it's a case of latching on to what you do right these days and nailing it down.

I just moved here last fall.. the only 18 I've done was Willow Run so far but I really like that course. Can see myself going back there for sure. Where do you like to golf?

Jeremy, for starters welcome to the forum!

I have recently gone through a situation similar to yours and had rounds ranging from 78-92. For me, if I was able to eliminate the few blow up holes per round (taking a triple, etc) I immediately saw my worst score posted in the 86 range.

For me, this boiled down to course management and solid ball striking. Nothing ruins a hole quicker than placing a tee shot OB and hitting 3 off the tee, etc. I have also been able to get my misses into a very acceptable range. If I miss a FW, I typically still have a look at the green. If I miss a green, I am typically within 8-10 yards at most and looking at a bogey if I can't get up/down.

Have you compared your scorecards from the 78 to 93 round to see the difference? Do you have 3 or 4 blow up holes in the 93 round or just a ton of doubles?

I also like to keep track of FW, GIR, and putts while also noting the distance of the putt made on the hole.

Typically I can look at my card after a round and see immediately where I did good & what I need to work on. Personally, I need to hit more GIR from 150 and in to shoot 70's consistently.

It happens all the time. I shot a 98 last Saturday then 83 yesterday. They were different courses but similar layouts. There are just days when you shake your head at some of the shot you make.

Plus One.....no matter how well I try to apply course management skills I still screw stuff up. I'm a very streaky golfer....3-4 good holes in a row followed by 3-4 bad holes in a row. It rarely all comes together in a nice way but it always seems to come together in a bad way

This happens to me more in the early part of the season. Last week it was during my round. I went 53 40 for a 93. I'm usually in the mid to high eightys when I've had a chance to swing the clubs for a while.

Oh, I'm able shoot all over the map, well the high end of the map anyway... It can be frustrating, but that's just golf if you ask me.
Just be glad you are more consistent than one of my golf buddies... He shot a +27 for 9 holes a couple of weeks ago, and I wouldn't be surprised if he went out and broke 80 tomorrow.

I don't think it is uncommon for scores to fluctuate. There are soooo many factors that can go into a round. With that being said, my scores for this year have been fairly consistent minus my last outing. All my score previous to the last 2 rounds were 73-78. Last Saturday I shot 80-82. However, it was raining off and on all day and I had mowed and weed-eated the day before so my arms were still "jello-ey". I never felt comfortable with a club in my hand. Those factors can throw off a round of golf.

I usually have more variation in the beginning of the season like now. So it make sense that you have some inconsistency especially since you took a long hiatus. Speaking for myself, once I am in a one or two rounds a week mode the variation is about 10 strokes low to high. Familiarity with the course also helps consistency. Weather too, like for instance its been windy and variable a lot so far this spring in NJ, plays a part. Summer tends to be much more uniform.
