As I read through various threads about socks, tees, putters, drivers...etc.
I notice that there is alway someone or someones that say ' that's way to expensive' or 'I would never pay that much for that' When do we draw the line? What is a truly dumb purchase? Am I a nut if I pay $500 for the latest driver? Or if I shell out a honeybone ($100) for 5 pairs of socks? What is a truly crazy purchase? Is there truly such a thing? I'm curious because I look at what's in the bag and the average guy on here has well over 2k in there bag. Some buy the latest and greatest, all the time. I actually see nothing wrong with it because as individuals we can do what we want with out hard earned cash. So I ask is there truly a stupid purchase? --- I am here: http://tapatalk.com/map.php?uql0a2 |

If you are not hurting you family with golf purchases then why not? I have buddies who hunt and fish and trust me, they drop a load on their bass boat, motor, and all the stuff that goes with the sport. Hunting is the same as some guys can't be satisfied with just one good rifle. Nope they read those hunting magazines and move quicker than big momma sitting on a hornets nest, to buy the latest toy.

I think the problem is that "stupid" and "dumb" are a) not quantifiable b) emotionally loaded.
If I say something's "way to expensive FOR ME" or " I would never pay that much for that", then those are true statements. What's not true is that anyone who chooses to pay that much is stupid. Their circumstances are such that to them, it makes sense. The most I could say might be "unwise", if say...the exact same socks are sold for 1/4 as much without the word "Golf" on them. Think "alignment sticks" vs "driveway markers". Even then, if someone has the coin....go to it, I can think they've made a bad decision without thinking they're somehow inferior for it. |

I don't think it's up to someone else to decide what purchase is stupid and what is justifiable. Like Tadashi said, it our hard earned skrilla and we can do as we see fit! Maybe there are a few people on here who make $100,000 a year and for them to spend a hundo on socks is no big deal. I think if you don't see it as a dumb purchase, then it's not.

I don't hate. If everybody did what I did, nobody would buy anything. If we're being real, there's probably no need for people to switch irons much more than every 3-5 years, but people like to buy stuff. It feels good to have new stuff.
I used to be a big waterfowl hunter. My mom was around it for 20 years between me and my step-dad. One time she said, "Sometimes I think you just like the 'stuff' more than the hunting." She had a good point. |

Anything Nike is a dumb purchase.
I think it's a dumb purchase, for example, a guy I know has 12 drivers from the past 3 years. He could never find one that worked so he kept buying new ones. The first 7 he was convinced he needed a stiff shaft so he now has 7 stiffs sitting at home. Next few were regular but he soon found out he needed medium. Two later and he finally found one that worked. I've told him he would have saved a two grand had he gone in and got fit for one three years ago, maybe doing the same this year, if he bought brand new top of the line for $400 each time that's $800 instead of $2000 on blind eBay purchases. I also think it's dumb when people buy golf balls they know nothing about just cause pros use them or the box says they are the best. But of course it's their money and I'm not one to tell people what to buy. |
