I would definitely go the FedEx route. Otherwise, you"ll be paying to have the airlines haul your sticks for you (unless a Southwest employee/referee throws a flag for "unnecessary fees"). In addition, you get the privilege of hauling your clubs through airports as well as the trip to the resort (assuming they don't get lost).

It's been a few years but I've stayed at the Legends several times. I would call down and have them give you their instructions on where/to whom you should send your clubs (if you're traveling with a group of guys you may also want to reference the person whom the reservations are under). The courses at the resort are always in good shape and the condo's are very nice too. Have a great time. I'm already jealous.

Default Going on a golf trip - how should I get my clubs there?
Hey Guys,

I have a foursome going down to Myrtle Beach in early March for a golf trip. Can't wait! However, just ran into a hiccup. Well my wife and I both work from home, and she gave up her car so now we're a 1 car household. We have a 5month old as well. I'm flying out of O'Hare since the airfare was $350 cheaper than flying out of Iowa (wtf right?). Anyway, it didn't occur to me until now that I probably shouldn't take the car for 6 days. What if there was an emergency? What if the kid gets sick? Crap happens, so now I need a backup plan.

I'm currently looking at bus tickets and train tickets to Chicago. It's actually far more economical than if I were to drive. However, that's not the issue. They have max bag sizes, all of which a golf traveling bag exceeds. So now I have no idea how I would get my clubs there.

I'm currently looking at shipping options and just sending them down to the clubhouse. This appears to be my only choice at this point. Can anyone with experience in this area help me out? What's the best/reliable shipping option?

rent a car to drive to the airport. When you get back, rent another one to get home.

Why not just rent a car to drive to Myrtle Beach and back?

That would add 4 days to the trip... 2 there 2 back.

Yea I'm not a big road trip person, and doing one solo for anything longer than 6-8 hours is painful.

I looked into renting a car, but at the cost for rental, mileage and gas I may as well have paid the $350 difference to fly out of the local airport.

I'm leaning towards FedEx. I got an estimate at $35 each way. Does that sound about right?

Id get them shipped to your hotel or to some other secure location. About taking the bus to O'Hare, I hear ya. Its way, way cheaper than driving to the airport. When I lived in Wisconsin and flew out of O'Hare I used to always take the Van Galder bus to the airport. $50 for a round trip bus ticket is way cheaper than driving there and they paying to park at the airport.

Just booked my ticket for $35 roundtrip. Wow, great call.

Now time to figure out which shipping option is the safest? Reading some threads and whatnot seems to indicate that UPS is horrible at shipping individual clubs, since they tend to break. I wonder how they would treat a 35lb box with a golf bag full of clubs? Ha.

Still leaning towards FedEx at the moment.

We're staying at the Legends Golf Resort, on site. We're renting a condo right off the course. So I would probably have to ship them to the Legends Clubhouse.

Don't forget to test ship it with things less important than your clubs. Like your fiance's wedding dress, for example.

Just an FYI, but I shipped my clubs from Detroit to Phoenix via FedEx for $80 fully insured for the total retail cost of replacing every club and my bag. The price even included them boxing the clubs up for me. Of course it was another $80 to get the clubs back home.

I've seen ads on TV here in the UK encouraging you to use them when taking clubs overseas. They do a 'hold at location' so the parcel is there waiting for you to check and sign for it when you arrive. It means the hotel doesn't become liable for holding the package as they haven't signed for it.
