I saw this today and decided to try it. Hit the best 3 wood off the deck that I have hit in months. 220 uphil, slight fade. I have found a new way to hit a 3 wood.

I always take divots with my fairways. Only way I know I hit it as centered as I want.

You don't have to take a divot or even something out of the ground. I just think of it this way..if you manage to make a decent mark in the fairway you hit it pretty center(not fat or thin) which to me is all I'm usually doing with a 3 wood/hybrid- just get it up in the air first then care about the accuracy part after

I tend to take smallish divots with my 3w, but larger ones with the hybrids....I hit them like they are irons so there can be a pretty decent divot at times.

Divots are definitely okay with woods and hybrids. You're supposed to hit down on them a tad.

In the words of David Feherty to Darren Clarke, "I take a three inch divot with the driver".

But in all seriousness, I know they say you are supposed to take a small divot with the 3 wood, but I just can't seem to bring myself to do it. But I saw what you are talking about with Tiger and Rory and I was thinking, "damn, they are laying cable".

No divots for me with woods. I'm a sweeper in that department. I might ruffle the grass a bit, but that is all.

I tend to pick the ball clean with woods & hybrids. If I do create a divot, there is a 95% chance it was a fat shot.

I take a divot with my 4 wood and hybrid off the deck. I tend to hit down on the ball with those clubs because it helps me get them up more. Odd I know, but hey, it works.

I tend to take a divot with my 3 wood and hybrids. I know I hit it solid if I take a small brushing divot (indicating I hit down on the ball). If I get too much of a descending blow, and take a little larger divot, I usually spin the ball up in the air a little too much.

I take divots all the time. Unfortunately, they usually go farther than my ball.

I never take one with mine. Might move the grass a little, but no divot.

Taking a divot with your fairway is an easy way to slice less.

Yeah, I always hate having to step over my ball to go get the sod to fix my divot...

Jack Nicklaus was a major advocate of divots with fairway woods.

I never try to take a divot with a 3-wood. I was always taught to sweep it off the ground and not take a divot. The thinking was always that a 3-wood doesnt have enough loft to hit down on the ball and still get the ball up in the air but I guess when you swing as hard as Tiger and Rory do, you can hit down with the 3-wood and still get it up in the air.
