Question on Net VS Gross score

I was hoping someone could help me out on this, I have seen guys on here post their net score and gross score. I do not know what the difference is so I will post my score vs the handicap line and see if one of y'all can tell me what the net is and how to figure it out. I tried to read and figure it out on wikipedia but it was all gibberish to me!

Par: 4 4 5 4 3 4 4 3 5 4 5 4 3 4 5 4 3 4 Par 72

HDCP Line: 5 9 1 11 17 13 7 15 3 2 12 14 16 8 6 10 18 4

My Score: 4 5 6 6 4 4 5 3 6 5 6 3 4 4 8 6 5 5 Score 89

Course Rating: 69.9 Slope: 117

Any help would be appreciated!

Well, your handicap is 18. Your course handicap is 19, that means you get 19 strokes for playing this course. You get a stroke a hole, plus two strokes for the #1 hardest hole. Your net score is 89-19=70.

Gross score is your actual score, net score is score subtracting your handicap as per that course.

Thank you for that, I knew that the HDCP numbers meant something but I didn't know exactly what. So the HDCP number rates the difficutly of the hole vs the other holes on the course? Thank you again Sean!

I thought 89-19=70

?

That is correct. So, if your handicap was a 6 you would get a stroke on each hole that is handicap rated 1-6. You would get nothing on 7-18.

Isn't that what I said? ;-)

You're welcome Mayday.

If the slope of a course was 127 you would get even more strokes. If, for example you received 20 strokes than you would get 2 strokes for the #1 and #2 most difficult holes and so on.

Anytime you need to know your course handicap, you can just go here: http://www.usga.org/playing/handicap...calculator.asp

Question, what if you par the hardest hole? Do you lose those 2 strokes? Or do you just take your final score and subtract 19?

If you par the hardest hole, then your net score for that hole is par minus 2 strokes.

I am not sure I under stand your question. You said that they post their net score. If they are putting this into the GHIN pc, the most you can post is a 7 on a hole.

Your Gross Score = 89
Your Net Score = 89 - 19 = 70
Your Net Score for GHIN Posting = 89 - 1 = 88.

Your handicap index is used to determine a course handicap for a particular set of tees based on the slope rating of that set of tees.

For competitions requiring a net score you simply subtract the course handicap from your gross score to obtain net score the handicap rating of each hole is meaningless.

The handicap rating of a hole is primarily used for match play. If you are in a match play competition, subtract the lower course handicap from the higher which determines how many strokes to apply for the higher handicapper. For example, if you are an 18 course handicap and I am a 10 course handicap you would get 8 shots (18-10) and those 8 shots would be applied to the 8 lowest handicap holes. So if hole five were the #1 handicap hole then you would get a stroke on 5. You make a 5 and I make a 4 then we halve the hole. We both make 4 you win the hole. You make 6 and I make 4 I win the hole. That process is applied for the eight lowest handicap holes. The other ten holes are played straight-up. I have seen the hole handicap used in team competitions where, for example, only three out of four balls count on each hole for a team.
