I would say for sure my iron play needs work, but what I think keeps me from the low 80s every round is a couple of blowup holes where I record like a 7-8. Sometimes I lose focus after hitting a bunch of good shots and don't concentrate and bam a terrible shot happens, followed by another 2-3 and then I have an 8 and after a couple of those your round is really screwed.

Consistency is where I need my work. Any given round, I can have 3 birdies, 5 pars, 4 bogeys, 3 doubles, and 3 snowmen. And what part of my game leaves me during a round is never consistent either - one day I'm OB on drives, one day I shank my chips into whatever hazard is closest, one day I chunk my irons. A more consistent swing from day to day is what I'm working on now. Swing mechanics first, then staying in the fairway.

Irons...without doubt there is no more frustrating thing in the world than standing in a perfectly lush green fairway and chunk-shanking a 7 iron off the edge of the world. I hit WAY more fairways than GIR. My chipping isn't bad and I've always been kinda proud of my putting...it just takes way to long to get to the green.

For me it's duffed irons and my short game. FIR is 40% & change, but even when I miss the fairway I'm not usually in jail. 18% GIR is terrible though. I've spent a lot of time this year working on my irons and I'm getting there. I also make sure to practice chipping whenever possible. Even yard chipping helps. Anything to minimize the chance of fat shots or the dreaded skulled wedge. Nothing like skulling a ball over the green after being just off in 2.

After each round I think about where I lost the majority of my shots. Did I hit errant drives or loose iron shots. Was my short game off or did I putt badly. I''ve become pretty good at self analysis of my round. ![]() Can we turn this into an Official "What I should have done at the course today" thread? |
