Rules Question

Is there any rule in golf that prohibits me from placing a penny about 1 1/2" in front of my ball before I take my swing?

Thanks

I believe there is, not sure on the exact rule. I know it would be considered a swing aid. It would kind of be like putting down an alignment stick.

8-2. Indicating Line of Play
a. Other Than on Putting Green

Except on the putting green, a player may have the line of play indicated to him by anyone, but no one may be positioned by the player on or close to the line or an extension of the line beyond the hole while the stroke is being made. Any mark placed by the player or with his knowledge to indicate the line must be removed before the stroke is made.

Exception:
Flagstick attended or held up - see Rule 17-1.

b. On the Putting Green
When the player's ball is on the putting green, the player, his partner or either of their caddies may, before but not during the stroke, point out a line for putting, but in so doing the putting green must not be touched. A mark must not be placed anywhere to indicate a line for putting.

Penalty for Breach of Rule:

Match play
- Loss of hole;
Stroke play - Two strokes.

Note:
The Committee may, in the conditions of a team competition (Rule 33-1), permit each team to appoint one person who may give advice (including pointing out a line for putting) to members of that team. The Committee may establish conditions relating to the appointment and permitted conduct of that person, who must be identified to the Committee before giving advice.

8-2a/2 Object Placed Beside or Behind Ball to Indicate Line of Play
Q. May a player place his pipe or a club beside his ball, or an object behind his ball, to indicate the line of play and leave the object there while playing a stroke?
A. No. Such action would be a breach of Rule

I never put anything down, but I am a "spot" player. I line every shot up with some spot several feet in front of the ball in line with the target. Good find on the rule by uscgmk!

I'm a spot player as well. My alignment is probably one of the biggest flaws in my game. And GOOGLE is an amazing tool......haha

Thanks. I've been using a penny about an 1 1/2" in front of my ball when I play alone to help me develop the habit of swinging through the ball instead of at it. Guess I will just continue to use this on the range

By all means keep up with what you're doing Ron. If it's not competitive or for handicap purposes then keep it up. Lately if I feel my tempo going to crap I will pull out my TaylorMade swing sleeve and get back to normal.
