I'm a litle confused. How could you lose money to a guy playing off a 9 who is really a 20? Or were you partners in a net better ball tournament?

Scramble team.

That's unfortunate. I get the idea of a guy's pride getting him to say such tomfoolery; but it's really reverse logic because while you're pride forces these guys to talk themselves up, they just end up losing that much more respect when they tee up and play like crud.

Ahh the old Vanity handicap huh? in some ways worst than a sand-bagger, vanities hurt their own team-mates
This.

A friend of mine did this a few years ago to make himself sound better. He couldn't break 100 in a tournament to save his life, but turned in bogus scores and his GHIN got as low as 9.0. Finishing 20+ strokes behind the next-to-last competitor in the first flight of several club championships made him see the light.

I really feel bad saying my HC is a 19.1. I haven't broken 90 but once and my avg score is 94. I feel like I play at a 22 HC.

That being said, I played in a 2 man captains choice this weekend with a guy who bragged about shooting in the 70's regularly. I think we ended up using 80% of my shots. Did shoot a 71 though.

I know a couple of guys like this. The guys I know always play together and love to count putts practically within 5 feet as "gimmes". They actually think they shoot in the low 80's or high 70's and believe their scores are legit. When we played in a 3 day team tournament together, I shot better than the 8 handicap two out of the three days and I am a 13. Makes no sense to me. The guy actually tried to give himself a "tap-in" putt that he missed because he one handed it, we called him out on it and he wasn't too happy about it but either were we.

Most of my friends are not interested in handicaps. So I'm pretty lucky in that I know exactly how my friends play and what I'm in for. We try and play in company tournaments and what not and its mostly for fun, but I always try and get them to take it a little more seriously. In the end, I know from playing in a couple leagues and tournaments, when you cheat as cheesy as the saying goes, you only cheat yourself. You're not helping yourself and you're definitely hurting your team.

isn't cheating very common in tourney's? Especially when there is decent prizes on the line? I've always wanted to jump into a tourney for fun and leagues but I hear so many horror stories of players cheating just to get that extra 1-2 strokes to put them in contention.

I dont want to sound like the fashion police, but i find it very hard to beleive for example that someone who plays to a 9, which doesnt happen over night doesnt have golf shoes. The cargo shorts and untucked polo just emphisised the point. Furthermore someone who is a 9 knows you dont pick up a ball in the rough, or knows to mark their ball on the green, or not to walk through someones line, (all things he did). And yes cheating runs rampid in tournaments, but this is just the opposite. If he was going to cheat, tell me his handicap was a 25 and proceed to shoot an 80. On the first day, best ball, we used one hole from my partner, on the second day, combined score he shot a 93. Needless to say i kissed my $150 goodbye on the first day. I just dont understand the thinking. You cant hide the results.
