Reverse Sandbagging, WHY?
This weekend played in a tournament with a coworker of my wifes who i had never met but in conversations with my wife had mentioned he was a 9 handicap. When he got to the course i was concerned, running shoes, cargo shorts and an untucked polo. When we warmed up i was kissing my money good bye, Hank Arron home run swing. (To his defense, he could hit it a ton, didn't know where it was going but it went a long way to get there. Once on the course I was ready to wrap my driver around his neck. I quickly became obvious that this guy was a twice a year with buddies and beer golfer. He didnt know course edicate, didnt know simple terminology and didnt know how a handicap was determined. At best he was a 20. When I got home my wife asked how the round went. The look on my face was answer enough. What a crappy two days of golfhttp://www.thehackersparadise.com/fo...t-wits-end.png

I guess the moral of the story, is 'play tournaments with people you know' haha..
I do feel bad.. I don't understand why people overhype their game going in to a tournament.. If anything, you'd expect them to lowball it and shoot 5-10 under their assumptive handicap. |
Wow! That sucks! I'd get my cash back from him
|
I don't understand this either. You would think they would do the other way around. I guess its maybe a pride thing, but I just hate all sandbagging in general http://www.thehackersparadise.com/fo...ies/angry2.gif

How much money was on the line, if you don't mind me asking? Because it sounds like you got robbed.

I know a guy who always tells me he shoots in the low 90's on a fairly difficult 18 hole course but when we play on an easier 9 hole courses he shoots like he should walk away with a score in the 100's. http://www.thehackersparadise.com/fo.../confused2.gif |
Chances are the guy wasn't sure what a hdcp was or how he achieved his hdcp. Since he was twice a year beer golfer he wouldn't not have known. I guess his play effected your play and you didn't have fun, too bad...nothing worse than a bad day on the lynx

Nothing can be more annoying than this.
It's interesting how people have vanity handicaps just to brag to their friends. It doesn't matter if you are a 8 vs a 9. I think some people just want to see that low number. Too bad it only hurts them when a tournment takes into account handicap calculation. |
Maybe his 9 is for 9 holes?
|
A handicap is earned! Too many people do not realize this. Unfortunately, guys like this just think it is a number next to your name, and they want to look cool. That just plain sucks!
|
It's a common thing that some guys do to try to impress people.
I know a couple of guys that do that. One of them has a ghin handicap. But...all he posts are his good rounds, so his hdcp stays low so he can say, "I'm a 8.7". But he really should be around a 12 to 15 at best. He never plays in any tourneys, so he never really has to back up his hdcp claim. |
Untucked polo is a bad sign? LOL. Good thing I'm tucking them in this year. Of course, I don't typically wear cargo shorts either. And I definitely don't wear running shoes.
But yea, that sucks. |

Well, since this is going to get there eventually anyways, Ill take the first step.
Whats the difference between this and playing blades? Putting yourself at a disadvantage to "Look Cooler". |
I sorta know how you feel Canuck227, I had a fellow ask me to play in a 2 man scramble because his partner had to cancel. I accepted and when we got to the 1st hole to tee off he insisted that I go first. It was a 155 yard par 3 and I hit it pin high about 2 feet off the green. I told him to go ahead and cut that and he proceded to whiff the ball 3 times. Needless to say, we posted my own score of 83, which I was pretty happy with considering he could not even give me a read on a putt. He knew nothing of golf ettiquette and was talking even during my swing, after about 4 holes I explained nicely about not talking with someone is addressing the ball all the way until they have hit it. Low and behold, when I started my back swing he began talking again. It was difficult to concentrate on any shot. We (I) came in last, but probably shot better that half of the guys in the tournament, just had no help. What he kept talking about was how he had not played this badly the one and only time he had ever played golf before this, and it had been the year before, I kept very quiet about that too. I have never shared this story and his name to anyone. So as this is not exactly what you are talking about in the thread, I thought it was a close enough example to share.

I dont know why people do this. There is a kid at my club that claims to be a 1 handicap. I played with him once and he is no where near a 1. He also didnt even place in club champ. Just to top it off he plays with blades. Theres another guy too that claims to be a 4 but hes never broken 80.
It just makes you look like an idiot when you say your a 1 handicap and then you go out and shoot in the 80's |
I got a co worker who is like this too. He is such a pain and every week he's trying to get me to go play with his buddies.
He says he's about a 6 hdcp but that's not counting the 5 foot gimmes and the fluff every lie he does. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...s/banghead.gif Oh and did I mention he just got a whole "free" set of clubs from Warrior Golf? Last week he tried to convince me the driver was better then my TM Superfast. Yeah right. Oh and he almost got me into trouble last year. He would just "give" me strokes with telling me. Basically my score on his scorecard was always a few strokes less then what I had. One time I didn't notice it and he turned in his scorecard WITHOUT my signature. I know I shot a 76 that day. He turned in a 71 for me. Guy running the weekly tourn didn't notice I hadn't signed it and awarded me the 2nd place money the next week. I had to be honest and return the money but that just placed a bad stigma on the two of us. (how I being the honest one got stuck with that saddle too is beyond me) He still to this day says I shot a 71 and that he gave me a few putts I would "normally" Make. WTF?!?!?! |

Topics like this always return me to my thought that golf is a honorable game played by many less than honorable people. People lie about many things and people have been lying about their handicaps as long as a system has been in place and a good number of golfers have no idea what golf etiquette even is. Nothing new there. |
Ahh the old Vanity handicap huh? in some ways worst than a sand-bagger, vanities hurt their own team-mates
