Default Kids on the course
On a day filled with jokes I just figured I would vent on something I have been meaning to talk about. As a young fella on these boards(20 next Saturday) I have always been curious ad to what older people think about kids being out on the golf course. Now I'm not talking about little ten year olds but more like young adults.

I'll play by myself on occasion and majority of the time I'll be let through and most of the time I always try to show off in a sense, as in I'll want to hit a great shot in front of a crowd(always have loved doing it). My question to these forums is does it bother you seeing a younger person out on the course, do you not like seeing a young person in front or behind your group. I love pounding the ball when in front of people I don't know but sometimes I wonder what they think when a kid is playing better than them(not saying I always do)

I love seeing young adults out playing, shows me the game is healthy and isn't going to die off. As long as you're not sagging your golf shorts it's all good.

I'll be 25 shortly so I still consider myself young and most older guys I've played with are a bit colder towards me at the beginning and I'm assuming they have a who's this young punk and I'll show him. I think as soon as you're respectful towards them, they warm up rather quickly and treat you no differenty than any other golfer they play with. I've yet to play a unpleasant round with anyone else because of my age,

I figure as long as you respect the course, respect the rules, and respect etiquette, no one can possibly have a bone to pick with you...
unless you're like the Wilson Staff guy......

Not at all. If anything I'm not a guy who yells when making a long putt and am very aware of my surroundings, I don't hit even try to hit into people, if anything I try not to play through unless offered. I love golf and always will and always have but I always feel like I'm not respected because I'm younger. But I have never come across someone who acts like a jerk towards me just due to age. In front of people I don't know I just try to hit the best shot I can and thank them more than once when they let me play through.

I still think I'm pretty young (35 is the new 25 right?)

Anyways, I'm with Ron... I think it's great that there are younger kids out there and in fact I encourage it. I love it when I see the dads out there taking their 10-12 year old just so they can see what life is like on a golf course. As far as personality is concerned, I don't think age has anything to do with it. Maybe I'm just more understanding to youthful hubris but I think it's energizing and love to be around that stuff just as long as it's not too over the top (think Jackass). And DBags will always be DBags no matter what age they are. JMO.

I love the fact that younger players are out on the course, but I have 4 boys ages 14,18,24,23 & 27 (i think) man im getting old. Anyway its great seeing them take up the game early.

We need to make sure we are getting young adults and youth on the course or this game will be in trouble. I think players like Fowler and others are great for the game. I know my sons like watching the young guns play. We need to make sure we are doing all we can to get the young players out on the course. Its our responsibility to teach them how to play the game correctly with respect for the game.

I have been to some courses where there were younger players playing that had no respect for the game or people around them and were drinking and hitting into people. but I have seen many older adults do the same.

SO I say BRING EM ON

I will be 40 in July, and I have no issues with age on the golf course. I 100% agree with RatFink as far as respecting the course, the rules, and of course proper etiquette. I have been playing for a long time, and I have never felt like that when playing with older, or younger players for that matter.

Most younger folks I meet are more respectful than some of the idiot "grown ups".

With being one of those young people at one time on the course, i encourage it. When i was younger there was a whole group of us young guns that were at the course almost every day. Alot of times we would go out with the older guys that were there alot too. They never minded us out there because we were there to play and not screw around.

Now with that said the young ones that bother me (and even the older ones at times) are the ones that come out just to mess around. They know they are no good and play maybe 5 times a year, but they come out anyways. They make it a terrible time for everyone then.

I'm one of these young guys at 22. I've only had one round where I felt like age mattered. My friend and I (he's 21) were paired up with these 2 50-60 somethings and from the first tee, I knew it was going to be a long round. The first words out of their mouth were, "Heh, you kids should let the real golfers tee off first."

That being said, I have been paired with many other older people and always have a blast. Most of the time, the older guys whip my rear end. I love getting tips from them on what I can do to really improve my game.

That is when you smoke them turkeys!
In the most polite and respectful manner possible of course.

20 is not a kid. Why would anyone have a problem with a 20 year old if they're seriously playing? My daughter has been playing full 18 hole rounds with me for two years. She's 13, 14 in May. Before that she would play partial holes, or part of a round. Right now she could play with anyone and hold her own. She played our home course last year with friends a number of times on their own, and will do it a lot this year as she needs to get out of my shadow. I wouldn't belong to a course that didn't encourage junior golf. It's been my experience that most everyone we play with think her skills and and the way she handles herself on the course is mind blowing. They love it. I'm sure there're some that don't, but most likely because she can beat them so they have to stay quiet.

When I was a kid we hung out at the county courses by ourselves all Summer long. We understood etiquette and never had a problem. Understanding etiquette is the key.

My home course has always been very involved in junior golf and we have two local high schools that practice and play their home matches at our course. Because of this, we have lots of younger players on our course everyday. 99% were taught well and are respectful towards the course, the rules and etiquette. I have no problem and I know of no one at our course that has a problem with younger people on the course.

To the OP, I might say that I can live without the showing off part a little. There are thousands of players that are longer and better, so it is not like you are doing anything unique or special....and, don't dress like the guy in your aviator. His is in a different class and situation. Would you rather be known as the guy that dresses flashy, or the guy that plays well? Just sayin........but I'm 50 years old too...

The best advice I ever got when I was your age was "let someone else brag about YOUR golf game" There are thousands of players out there that can whip ya and whip ya good.

Just respect the course and the others using it and you will be fine.

Kids and women should only be allowed on the course one or two days a week, after 3:00. And NEVER on the weekends.

Anyone 14 or younger I don't like seeing on my home course. I'm not speaking in general of all the 14 year olds but there are a ton at my home course that are just awful, have no respect for anyone else on the course and are SLOW as hell. They yell on each hole and just act like idiots.

When I see them out there I sure hope I wasn't doing things like that when I was 14.

Canadian teenagers probably think they're playing hockey.

ok this just happened to me last sunday. i am 28 yrs old but i dont look a day over 17. I went to play one of the local courses and my buddy didnt show up so i still played and i got paired up with two older gentleman. one guy dressed the part looked like a real pro. the other guy looked like he just rolled out of bed.. so were on the first tee. i introduce myself to both of them. and i got nothing in return so im thinking to myself akward moment and today is going to suck i should of just left.. i tried small talk when we were waiting on tee boxes.. still nothing. basically i had to let my play do my talking. it eventually got brought up that i was in the military for almost 10 yrs now. and still these dudes were sticks in the mud eventually as i was keeping pace with the pro looking golfer its like a switch flipped inside his head and he wants to talk my ear off now. i understand that this situation is completly opposite of kids on the course. but why do you older guys act like that towards young adults.. well i guess im not young im almost 30. what do you guys think??

I think it's great when I see younger kids out there. I know I started golfing when I was 13 and my club made sure we attended weekly free lessons and tought us proper etiquette. I remember once my brother who was 12 at the time went through a bunker with his pull cart ( he didn't know any better) needless to say the course pro came around and approached him nicely and told him he shouldn't do that and to respect the course. He did it in a nice way and helped my brother learn etiquette. We were also told that if we didn't reach the green in 8 shots, to pick up our ball and bring it to the green and putt. That way we weren't too slow and yet had the chance to imrpove. Kids are ok as long as they're shown proper etiquette (junior memberships should come with a mandatory 1 hour group lesson a week)
