Default So you have your Green Jacket...
I rode by the Augusta National Sunday and had weird thought about Nick Faldo pop into my head.

I know Nick Faldo hasn't been playing in The Masters or any other tournments for many years now. I don't think he even participates in the Par 3 Contest either. I know he has his tv deal and he stopped playing the Masters when he took over as lead golf analyst for CBS Sports.

Personally I would play until they had to wheel me around ANGC. I know some disagree with seeing previous winners shoot in the 80's but that is just part of the tradition to me.

2 QUESTIONS FOR YOU: (1) If you won The Masters how much would they have to pay you not to play your practice, 2+ competitive rounds, & the Par 3 Contest (if you choose to play in it). (2) How long would you continue to play in The Masters?

i would take advantage of it as much as possible. i agree with you, winning a green jacket puts you in a fraternity like no other and the perks of being in that fraternity are amazing. i'd play until i couldn't any more.

I would play until I wasn't physically able to handle walking that course, because it's not an easy walk or until I felt I could compete on it. If the course was kicking my butt every year I would probably stop playing.

If I was past my prime I would sit back in my green jacket with a nice drink and watch the young guns struggle and remind myself how good/lucky I was to even get a green jacket.

Do past winners get any privledges outside of masters week? can they swing by any time for a round? If so that is what i would do as not to embarrass myself on TV

I dont think I would play knowing I didnt have the game or nerves for Augusta National anymore .
I would not want to be embarrassed on national TV shooting a big number .

I would hope past winners wouldn't have a problem calling up and getting a round in. I've heard when people are invited by members they had to ride in with the member they are playing with but that was several years ago. Invites (practice rounds) for upcoming Masters and previous winners I have no idea on that though.

I did read were Brandt Snedeker was invited to play he would play as much as he could because he wasn't in college or turned pro yet. He said he think they almost changed the rule since he almost wore his welcome out.

I'd only continue playing as long as I felt I had a legitimate chance of winning the tournament. I'd never tee it up in a tournament if I felt I couldn't win. I figured out fairly quickly I didn't have what it takes to win on the Hooters Tour and if simply making the cut is your goal your reaching for the stars.

I guess if your Palmer or Nicklaus you can play it anytime you want anyway because they are honorary members. I doubt they have a problem playing anywhere really.

I just find it hard to not play in it but I do see the point when they come to terms they have no chance in winning and don't want to make a fool of themselves on TV. I remember Charles Coody about killing us on #1 with a big shank to the right. But he did chip it to 3 feet and made his par. However I think he still shot close to 80.

Tom Watson said after he lost the British Open 2 years ago that playing in the Masters wasn't fun to him anymore because he couldn't play that course.

I think many years ago in a Golf Digest magazine said that Augusta National was only open for play 3 or 4 months a year to members to even play , things may have changed by now .
And if memory severs me , past winners cannot just drop by for a round , they have to call in advance .
Please correct me if I am wrong here .

My understanding is that they were closed may -aug or may -sept when its just too hot... and open the rest of the year

I never thought any past winner could just drive up and get out, I just meant they probably have some type of privledge to play there and if they are past their prime and don't want to embarrass themselves on TV they can still enjoy the course other than on masters week...

I'd be like Brandt Snedeker, I would wear out my welcome playing there so much.

I would play until I felt I couldn't break 80. I feel like that if you can shoot under 80, you aren't looking awful and aren't holding things up to much.

I'd play until I didn't feel like I was competitive there on a good day.

Past winners are considered honorary members, hence the green jacket. If you notice, all of the 100 acutal paid members have matching green jackets. Winners can book tee-times like anyone else there but the course is closed all summer.

They are open mid October to 3rd Sunday in May usually.

They would have to pry the clubs from my hands if I could play to keep me from going out there!

I would play until someone told me I wasn't welcome anymore. Even then I would try to find a way on.
