I only mark my ball if someone asks. Unless of course I'm playing with my son. He has the aim of a shotgun loaded with buckshot from 60 yards... No tellin' where he might go. If I'm by myself, I don't usually mark unless I'm feeling particularly anal that day.
That's pretty bad...

I always mark my ball because I want to wipe it off before I putt. I don't put it back until it's my turn to putt. Whe it's my turn, the putt has been read and I'm ready to go other than a couple practice strokes. I putt out if it's close, but I miss way too many 2' to 4' putts to worry about saving a couple seconds on the green by just walking up and hitting it. I look those over for a second. On the other hand, I suspect tee to green I am close to JB speed.

But I take my time a little bit on the green, no doubt about it. I line up short putts, and have taken to looking at longer putts from both sides.

Yeah, but he's only 10. So as long as he's having fun, and HE doesn't care, neither do I.

I always mark my ball on the green. I like to clean my ball, read the putt, then replace it

Watching four guys ahead of you mark and putt and mark again and putt again is enough to drive you completely up the wall. Of course they have to stand there and read the next putt all over again since the last time they were putting in their rotation was about a week ago! I will offer to mark before being asked if it looks like I am in someone's line or if it looks like I am close enough to be a distraction to them. I will always putt my way clear unless I have left the ball such that I have to stand in someone's line to putt my way clear.

+1 I'll also mark mine if directly in their line of sight, like straight away from them behind the hole, but unless the ball picked up some chunks I leave it. I sometimes stick a tee in the green next to the ball while I line it up, haha.

My regular group plays ready golf. We don't believe in honors if you walk onto the tee box first, you tee off first. As for the greens, unless it's in your way generally no marking is being done. We're all serious golfers but we're casual about ettiquette (and spelling).
The one thing that bugs me, and I don't know why, is when a guy is walking when a shot is being made. Even if i'm about to tee off and I can't see you or hear you, please don't walk back to the cart cuz you decided to switch clubs. I guess it goes back to my days working as a caddie, no matter who is swinging, I'll stop and watch. For safety and to help find the ball later I guess.
I play ready golf. Common sense and good etiquette are the rule. I hate to play a round in more than 3 1/2 hrs. We usually play at a good clip. None of this 6-7 practice swings. One or two and then hit the d*mn ball. Who ever is ready, hit the ball! And, yes, watch your buddy's ball flight to cut down on locating a lost ball. Go to the closest ball and drop that person off with 2-3 clubs. Within 100-125 yards, take 2-3 clubs AND YOUR PUTTER. On the green I agree with most posters. Mark if your ball must be cleaned or if your ball is in or very close to someone's line. Putt out if it is in your comfort zone (1-3 feet?). Take your time if it is for an eagle or birdie!!!

I mark most of the time because I want to clean my ball plus I use a line on the ball for alignment. I don't have any problem with others that choose to not mark their ball as long as it not close to my line.

I am fine with people marking their ball all the time as long as we are playing ready golf. I played with a group on friday who were playing by the rules the whole time making for real slow play. Three of us would be on the green ready to putt and the fourth in the bunker, he would splash out and be away but now he has to rake the bunker and clean his club and grab his putter and then walk to his ball and mark and then putt. This happend on the first hole so after he splashed out i was furthest away of the other three so I went to line up my putt and putt while he was getting to his ball. The other guys in the group looked at me like I was crazy and told me that "Jim's still away!" I HATE SLOW GOLF!

I'd have said "So what's that got to do with anything?"

Pace of play has become more important to a reasonable round of golf than strictly observing "honors". I'd have informed them that our basic requirement was to maintain our place on the course, not twiddle our thumbs as we watched Jim rake the bunker. I have little patience with people like that.
