Default How has your game faired under winter conditions
This was the first day in several that I was not so bundled up that I could almost swing freely and I took advantage of the opportunity to hit the course range before hitting the first tee. I was looking for my lost iron groove. I can almost hit driver coming out of the parking lot but must get a practice session in now and again in order to keep some sort of a groove going with the irons.

Regardless of how much performance apparel I own, on some days I still end up so bundled up that my turn ends where my clothing is so twisted around me that I can’t turn anymore whether I want to or not. Within a few holes of starting to play the round it got markedly colder and I was back to Mr. Nahnook of the North. However even just getting in a few holes of “normal” golf was very reassuring. Playing is better than not playing regardless of the circumstances but you can play enough of these winter rounds for you game to really end up getting buried under the cold and all of this clothing, particularly since practice sessions are hard to come by at this point.

Anybody else finding it difficult to maintain some semblance of a game with the cold and being bundled up round after round?

I gave up bundling up to go play golf.I'll wait till it warms back up in the spring and start fresh unless it becomes unseasonably warm.Hopefully the layoff will do me good.

Its hard to play when you're all bundled up. For our turkey day tournament, I had on a longsleeved shirt, a fleece pullover, and a wind jacket on top and it was difficult to swing like normal. Not to mention my hands were frozen and numb

yeah, i don't like having tons of layers on. if i can keep my head and my hands warm, i'm usually pretty good to go. i played yesterday morning and when i arrived it was 39* and when i left it was 41*, so it wasn't super cold, but cold enough to where i had to focus on keeping my hands warm.

i like to use my handy golf mittens and hand warmers, that works well. the one thing that i will recommend is not to touch any part of your irons with your bare hands other than the grips. i made the mistake of carrying a few irons by the shafts and it just made my hands colder, which in turn, made it harder for me to warm them up. i can comfortable golf in pants and a sweater as long as my head and hands are warm.

It was 74 today in middle Ga so it was short sleeve weather. I had bought me a cart cover yesterday for my B-day as the cool stuff is coming in. It should be quite cold as it is suppose to reach somewhere in the low 50's tomorrow . It's year round golf here but it get's colder in January & February. We have to dress accordingly and some days it's definitely cart cover golf!

My group tees off at 6:30 am during the summer because of the weather and the prices are cheaper. Now we tee off at 6:30 am soley for the price. It was 55* and it felt like my ball was replaced with a Granite Carved Rock shaped like a golf ball.
Still no place I'ld rather be.

Shot an 88 with a jacket on the front nine. Actually did better on the front nine (44 with 0 mulligans). I had a 44 with a few mulligans on the back because I hadn't played much and I wasn't worried about score.

Another thing that I have noticed is that playing off the hardpan that passes for the first cut of rough that borders the fairways this time of year is risky business as it is really hard now. My right wrist has gotten so inflamed that I am wearing a brace at night just to take the strain off of it and let it heal up some. Now that we are down to the last few days of play I am moving the ball out into the fairway if I land on hardpan as it just is not worth the additional damage to the wrist to play it from there.

I played in short sleeves too. It's pretty fun, except we have had sporadic cold and rain spurts recently. I was walking, so 50 degrees felt more like high 60s.

I'll play in whatever, luckily here in Oregon we don't really get days below freezing. Most winter days are in the 40's, overcast, and likely raining. I like to wear an Under Armour base layer, a ss golf polo, and maybe a short sleeved wind jacket. If it rains I'll swap out the wind jacket for my lightweight Dry joys jacket. I wouldn't want to play with lots of layers on... but I would,

The difficulty I have in the winter is with pitch shots from soggy areas, it's just sooo easy to hit it fat and take a 3 inch deep divot. I hate giving up strokes for stupid reasons like this.

You're much more dedicated than I am. My golf season usually ends late October. This year it ended early October. I hate playing in the rain - "I put people's lives in danger..." LOL

I've played some of my best golf of the season since it started getting colder. I love that the courses are deserted right now as well.

i agree dude. although, there's some old timers around here that will be out there battling the elements as well.

i'm thinking of getting a pair of those black rain golf gloves. you ever use those? anything to help keep the hands warm.

Jrod bought the FootJoy ones and they started tearing after three rounds. I just pocket my ungloved hand.

Yah don't buy the FJ ones, the first set didn't make it off the range and the set they replaced em with made it 3 rounds like hawk said before they started tearing in like 4 different places.

I struggle with the cold a bit but as a native of Ohio, I've found some things that help. Stretch a little extra before you get out there. Your swing gets shorter with tighter muscles and more layers on. Those short swings can lead to those ugly shots we're all trying to avoid. This also means staying loose while out there. There is nothing worse than a slow round in the cold. Keep jumping around and doing some arm swings.
As far as what to wear, that gets a little tricky. I tend to steer clear of under armour. It makes me feel too tight, the thing you're trying to avoid. I tend to go with a long sleeve t-shirt, turtleneck of sorts (as stylish as they are), and a sweater. Seems to work out alright for me.
Last thing. If you have to go with the shorter swings for a day, don't fight it. If that is all you have for the day, just go with it. Take a little extra club that you don't need to pure to get it there. Play the punch shot or 3/4 swing. As my college coach used to say, "You gotta dance with the person you came to the dance with." No reason to try and change it while you're out there. And remember, pars look better and better the colder it gets.
