Default Off season golf workouts !?
Just finishing up my first season of serious golf in MASSACHUSETTS - playing on borrowed time right now with the weather. What do you guys do in the off season to keep the improvements that you made over the course of the season? Heated ranges? Putting in the living room or just swinging a club? How do you keep that grooved swing when there is snow falling?

I do a bunch of golf specific exercises with a medicine ball. It fits into my physical therapy and I can watch tv while I do them.

I think the best thing you can do in the winter in the northeast is to putt and putt and putt some more. If you can find an indoor or heated range, that is great too but I think you'll see the biggest improvements if you work on your short game over the winter.

I live in a northern climate also and try to get to Anytime Fitness 5 or 6 days a week for a 50 minute cardio workout and then 3 times a week I will cut the cardio down to 20 minutes and get in a 25 minute weight program. I hit balls indoors in our indoor range (net) but don't try any radical swing changes since you are not going to see any results in the ball's flight. Putting practice is a great idea.

Nice ideas with stretching more and putting - thanks! Already got the fitness routine down! (it happens by accident with the GF being personal trainer/RD/Nutritionist!) Anyone have a schedule ? Like if you were lucky enough to find a heated bay- 3 times a week? Once? Woods on Monday - Irons on Wednesday?

My plan is to go to the Dome to hit balls one time during the week and once on the weekend. I practice putting and chipping in the basement almost daily. No working out for me.

Hehe, yes I have built an unnaturally huge right bicep. I suppose the beer is at least half the reason for that.

Weights and stretching. Lots of Core-work now. Going to try and hit indoors once a week. Oh and I practice swings in the living-room daily, just 10-15 swings until the Mrs goes ballistic. She usually chooses between: Stop, You could hit the: floor/ceiling/kids/dog/furniture........lol

Love to hear what you think of the Shake Weight after you've had a chance to use it.

Will be starting the p90X after Turkey day. It incorporates a lot of stretching and is only 3 months so should work great for golf.

I live in Tampa and my wife is one of the best athletic trainers in the Southeast. The best thing you can do is go to the gym and workout. Mix in cardio with weight training while maintaining your flexibility. The best way to do that is with low weights and high reps. NEVER lift too much weight; especially as you get older. I hear a lot of people talk of stretching. Be very careful here. Never stretch a cold muscle. Warm up the area you'll be training before you start lifting. For example, before running....walk slow...then progress to faster. You may only stretch a muscle AFTER it has been properly warmed up. Think about your muscle being a piece of gum that is cold from being in the fridge. It isn't plyable at all until warmed up. So, after your workout.....do your stretching.

During the winter months, I go to the gym 3 to 5 times a week. Three times a week, 30 min cardio followed by 30-45 min of strength training. Two times a week just cardio. Strength training consists of everything from pushups to lifting weights. I just keep it mixed up. Just started going to a aqua class with my wife on sat morning. Figure the more I move, the better I will be.

I live in Massachusetts as well. During the off season I go to the gym five to six times a week. I stretch, use resistance bands, do squats, and leg lifts. I also walk the golf course, weather permitting, and hit golf balls in heated bays at my practice facility.

I putt every day in the living room... I even chip a little with my 8 iron.
I'll step outside a foot or 2 off the patio and swing... I try to hit my divot consistently...
Just started at the heated ranges this week... working on setup, alignment and ball striking.

workout wise, I stick to same routine all year of lifting 3 days per week and cardio 5 or 6 days per week... however, I going to put a focus and flexibility to try and improve my range of motion.

Over the winter I usually bulk up by lifting heavy and I do as much cardio as I can stand. Around Feb-March time I back down the weight and lift with more dynamic movements that incorporate balance. As it gets closer to spring I increase my cardio and stretching to drop the natural insulation stored up from winter and get my flexibility back.

I don't know how people can stand Tony Horton and his programs. I only made it through a month before I gave up P90X I couldn't put up with his "cheesy-ness" over and over again. The movements are too isolated/repetitious for my taste (I know the program promotes progressive changes but it doesn't have enough dynamic movements to keep my interest).
