Like some others, my ball is very high and gets little roll. I'm happy to be anywhere on the green.
Precisely. The only time I ever attack a pin is when I know I'm in a groove with my swing which could be never in some rounds. Put me in the middle of the green and I'm happy as a lark.
I'm not accurate enough to play target golf so I always play for the middle.
All 3 of you have it correct, there are very few of us here who are good enough to pick a target on a green & actually shoot for it & hit it or get close. Most of us weekend hackers are just damn happy to hit the green.

On approach shots if I am inside 100 yards, I aim at the pin directly assuming it is not tucked on a ledge. I try and judge spin (back amount),etc...If it is outside of 100 yards, I do what was taught to me last year by a famous coach. Aim at the middle of the green and take your 2 putt for par.

Almost all amateurs believe they hit the ball farther than they do, so in most cases it would be wise for all of us to take an extra club.
I think I know the coach you are referring to.

I try to hit it to the middle of the green. With an 11 hcp i need to hit greens and 2 putt. i am not playing for birdies, I'm playing to not make doubles.

I go for the middle, unless it's a distance that I'm really comfortable at; then I'll go after the pin.

I spent a lot of time with my range finder and a notebook figuring out how far I hit each club in my bag. I'm the least consistent with my 5 iron and my 4 wood. I tend to catch those two fat, and it lands me in trouble about half the time.

I will get the yardage from my GPS. Normally it's the center of the green for my target. I will look at the front of the green if it's a forward pin and I'm inside 100.

I almost always miss though.....

It depends on the day and how I am swinging. I know generally how far I carry each club, but that varies with the weather, my old body, and some unknown "z" factor. All of those factors add up to about 15 yards more or less. Like JP, I want to know how far to the front and the middle. I am not good at feathering a shot, so I want to take less club and hit it harder instead of finessing a longer club. Lay of the land is also important, so I club up and down depending on the terrain.

"Feathering" is an interesting term and a good way to describe hitting a less-than-full shot with a given club and I have trouble with that as well. I think it was Vijay who said the same thing; that he'd rather drop a club and swing harder rather than take something off of a longer club.

I agree with him.

I have the same issue, if I try to take something off it turns into deceleration and usually a fat, fat shot that just irritates me to no end.

+1....one of my goals this year is to commit to a shot and trust the club more
