Not to be overlooked, I received my copy very quickly after I was informed it was on the way. Nice job there!
First thing I noticed was the cover and the paper. The publication quality is first class all the way. I love the heavy, glossy stock. And while it's not cheap, I'm sure, it adds a great deal of class to the photos and the magazine as a whole. Second, and this is a big one for me lately, the advertising as a whole was about right - not overwhelming and certainly not there just to create revenue. It's nice to see a golf magazine that doesn't weigh 10 pounds because every other page is an ad of some sort. Third, and this also grating on me with GD and Golf, there were no swing tips from pros and teachers (at least none that I saw). The great majority of the instruction offered in the other publications is useless to 90% of their readers. Without real live instructions most of these tips go a long way to making our already troubled swings worse. Short, easy tips are great. Changing your swing plane or other more complicated moves should be left to professionals giving lessons. I liked the layout and the vote for the winner at THP in the 2009 Awards Nominations, but I found it to be a little long in the teeth. I guess as the first magazine it's okay but I would have preferred more new or different equipment information. I liked the tester’s comments in the Tool Shed followed with the overall results. The "who it's for" rating is dynamite and should be included in every equipment review in every magazine. The interview was perfect length. Informative but not so long as to bore me to death. If found the "front 9" and "back 9" question format innovative and intriguing. The Gift Guide was okay but every magazine has this and I've found myself moving past it pretty quickly. At least THP's products are more unique and different. The Diamonds in the Rough section was good to see. I'm an equipment junkie and like to see new and innovative products that are somewhat on the fringe but making headway because of their ability to help all golfers at all levels. While I'm not into women's golf I think THP may hit a home run by catering to the other gender. There's no magazine out there that does that worth a darn. One last thing I would like to see is more in depth information on club fitting and how and where to get fitted. Every magazine, expert, and web forum are espousing the advantages getting fitted for clubs gives you, but the best fitting centers are in far away places - CA, FL, NY, CO, etc. It would be nice to see some "fitter reviews" or recommendations for those of us that live in the Midwest and can't afford to fly 2 hours or drive 5 or 6 or more to get fitted by a professional with the best equipment and experience. Overall, I believe THP is on to something here and I thought the magazine was great. I can't wait to see future issues with more equipment focused information rather than the reader's choice awards. |
