Default Scores or facsimilie?
Have you ever been teamed up with someone that posts a score much better than than they shot.I've had the opportunity to play with a lot of differnt people and somethimes they have a pretty good imagination.I really don't care what they post if money isn't involved and it's not a competition, just casual golf.I'm of the mind that unless you post your true score you won't get better. No fluffs,no mulligans or gimmes is the way I like playing. In a casual setting I can be swayed a time or two(especially after a terrible drive or the gimme is on the lip of the cup). When I do though I feel I cheated myself. What's your take on the subject?

I see it all the time. Honesty, and integrity is a lost cause now days for the most part. Both in business, and games. Golf is no different. It is just slower at degrading itself. I am not even sure I am 100% honest all the time in some of my dealings, and games. I try to be, but sometime the unintentional happens.

I try to play down and dirty every time, but I'm not above encouraging a playing partner to take another shot after a poor drive or give up a gimme when they've been struggling.

Sometimes (a few times per round), if I hit a bad drive, or miss the green entirely, or hit a fatty, I'll hit a second (or third if time allows) to prove to myself that I can do what I was intending on doing. HOWEVER, I always go back to my original ball and play that one through the hole for my official score. I rarely play out my second ball, as it would take too long, and I hate holding up people behind me.

Depends on what you mean by posting. For GHIN purposes I will post scores better than what I actualy shot. ESC requires this if you shoot higher on a hole than is allowed under the rules. Unfortunately for me this happens every few rounds.

Now if you mean posting as in on their scorecards to turn in for a tournament or MGA or just to brag about that is different.

I play em down and putt em out. I play with guys who are fast and loose with the rules, but that is their problem, not mine. I played with a guy yesterday who gave himself liberal mulligans, 3 ft gimmees, and touched the sand behind the ball when he was bunkered. Oh well, to each his own. I hope he keeps those scores for handicap purposes so when we come up against each other in a tournament I can clean his clock.

I do this too. I guess I need the confidence to hit my intended shot before I proceed.

I find this is the way to be when someone is struggling or just taking up the game.It makes a more enjoyable round for all. It's the guys that brag about shooting in the 80's when it more like the 100's that I find it somewhat comical and annoying.Hey but it's their game.

Yeah, it lets me walk off the course knowing I'm capable of hitting good (or better) and more consistant shots. The first few rounds I ever played, I didnt do this, and remember being more frustrated than anything because I couldn't seem to remember any quality shots. Knowing I can get there makes me keep coming back. Plus, if I'm going to pay $30-60 a round, I'm going to get a few extra shots in at a quality practice enviornment...

If most golfers could play their second shots, they could be on tour.

I guess this goes back to Diane's positive vs. negative thinking, for me if I've just hit a really lousy shot I'm better off just walking or riding up for my next one. If I hit two bad shots from the same place I'm liable to spontaneously combust.

After all, mulligan is just a contraction of "Maul it again".

My friends and I play by the rules. Even in the Winter - we'll hit out of divots, etc. - if nothing else, it's good practice. The funny thing is that we even play by the rules on the sim - we don't ground our clubs in the "sand." I want to walk off the course with an accurate sense of how I really played that round.

How do you hit a sand shot on the sim?

There is a section on the floor of "sand" - it's similar to the rough - fake grass, but is much softer and cream colored. Your ball sinks into it when you put it on there. It's the least realistic shot on the sim though - we play it more like a chip. The only difference is that we don't ground our clubs.

I'm sure that this opinion won't surprise most of you, but I never facsimile. I either mark an honest card or I don't bother to keep score. If I keep score, I play by the Rules of Golf. I don't play "winter rules", I don't take gimmes unless it's a conceded putt in match play (I have to modify this by saying that I do play with some friends who will kick a 12" putt back to me, and I'm not going to start a fight or create bad feelings over a tap in). I damn sure don't do mulligans.

I said, "Well, you boys can go play golf. Or else you can make up some other game and go play that, instead." In the game of golf, the ball is played as you find it. -- Harvey Penick upon being asked by his UT golf team about winter rules.

We are allowed to move our balls out of divots and lift and clean on the fairway. The course posts signs. They are used when handicap season closes in the Winter or in the case of muddy conditions.
