Well, this is one way to break an addiction.
Last weekend while playing my "home" muni in Minnesota, I felt a snap in my left shoulder after some stretching and hitting a good drive. My left shoulder had been a bit sore for a couple weeks, but I figured it would go away. My new instructor's swing changes made it a bit tender, but I'd get through it. Well....after that snap I was in some real pain. Sneezing while driving almost put my wife and I into the ditch as everything in my upper body seemed to spasm at once. So today I finally got into the chiropractor. He's thinking I tore a muscle linking my shoulder blade to my ribcage. The good news is it's not permanent, the bad news is that I'm out of golf or fishing for at least one month. I'm sure there's a good reason this couldn't have happened in December. Take care of your backs, folks. Listen to them when they hurt and don't overdo it. |

Man I had a deep tear in a muscle. Right half way between the blade and the spine. I took a couple of weeks off and tried to play a round. Hurt so I bad I couldn't finish. Took 2 months for it to go away. I was just starting out and I over did it at the range. Now I can swing all I want and it never bothers me but...2 long months....
You got to let it heal all the way. If you don't...it will go back to day one. Take care 92! Maybe after a couple of weeks you can work on chipping and putting if you take it easy. Just listen to your body. |

I feel for you. I tore the connective tissue away from my ribcage during a tournament a couple of years ago. An area just right of my sternum all the way around to my side just went on fire when I did it. I suffered through the end of the tournament hitting a 3 iron abut 140 because I could not swing properly. I went from 2 under to 7 over in just a few holes.
It took two trips to the ER before I got a Dr who also golfed. He diagnosed the problem and put me on a regimen of stretching and ibuprofen that set me right in about a month. It still acts up, but only if I don't properly stretch in cold weather. Good luck. |

Hope you heal quickly 92Esquire!
I tore my rotator cuff a few months ago, specifically the supraspinatus tendon, while bench-pressing heavy weight (well, heavy for me) in the gym without adequate warmup. I have surgery scheduled in September (after the company scramble that I have to play in every year ![]() My shoulder hurts every day, and I need to take a pain med every night before going to bed, but I can still play golf. I even had the orthopedic surgeon write that I can play on the medical visit summary so my wife would believe me! |

I've got something similar going on. A couple of weeks ago I was hitting a FW out of some fairly heavy rough and felt a sharp pain on the outter egde of my left shoulder. I've been playing through it, can't really complain to my wife as she'll just say I'm playing too much golf.haha Anyway I'm shutting down the golf for the rest of the week and hoping for the best. I'm thinking it is a minor tear, not sure how long it will take to heal but it might have to wait until Dec.

Actually, the doc is nervous about me doing anything that gets my shoulders swinging - I asked about putting and he suggested that it wouldn't be a good idea. The problem is that I'll feel better within another week or so, but won't be healed. He warned me that I'm going to be highly susceptible to re-injury, and the next time won't heal nearly as fast. My wife is being an absolute stickler about this one.

I started golfing because of an injury. Last year, thinking I was still 17, I decided to come back after a couple of years away from competition, and entered a freestyle tournament (wrestling). I ended up with one win, one loss, and an injury default due to a blown out elbow. I realized that I was too old (too married with a kid, more like), to be beating my body up like that anymore. Once the elbow healed, I went out to play golf for the first time in five years, and haven't looked back.
