Default Stephen King Movies
Which Stephen King movies do you consider his best in comparison to the books the movies are based on?

For me there is only one, The Shawshank Redemption based on the short story Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemptionin for the bestseller Different Seasons.

As for myself, I'll probably go with The Green Mile. But then I remember that I haven't read the book it's based upon yet...

Guess I'll have to go with The Shining to say that I've read the book too. Although I prefer the mini-series to Kubrick's film. Yes, throw your stones.

My #1: is also definitely The Shawshank Redemption... and that's not just my favorite Stephen King movie, that's in my Top 5 all time favorite movies.

2. Stand By Me - also in my Top 5 all time favorite movies
3. The Shining - Stanley Kubrick version... loved the book, the TV mini series wasn't all that bad, but Kubrick's vision was more horrifying.
4. The Green Mile - it was pretty touching
5. Apt Pupil - good adaptation, although the short story was more gruesome

I've probably said this in another thread, but I really feel as though Shawshank Redemption & Stand By Me were much better than the novellas.

Just checking. Because you know, there all these "Jerry Bruckheimer films" & "Spielberg films" that they didn't even direct... just produced.

I also think The Shawshank Redemption is better than King's story. Honestly, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption was never one of my favorite Stephen King stories/novellas. I was about to say Sleepwalkers (it's a great comedy ), but that was an original script.

How DARE anyone badmouth Maximum Overdrive? Come on! It's got... Emilio Estevez! And AC/DC! And... an ATM calling Stephen King an asshole! (See, even inanimate objects can discern quality!)

My top 5 King movies:
1. Dead Zone - David Cronenberg
2. Carrie - Brian De Palma
3. Shawshank Redemption - Frank Darabont
4. Misery - Rob Reiner
5. Christine- John Carpenter

Dolores Claiborne isn't half bad either. (Note conspicuous absense of one of Kubrick's least successful movies.)

I thought Maximum Overdrive was a fine example of both King's directing ability and Estevez's acting ability (both very poor, but displayed wonderfully).

I think Misery is one of the best adaptations, Shawshank is an excellent movie in its own right and does top the short story.

Has anyone said The Langoliers? Well, I'll say it. Scary stuff (although, I haven't seen t since I was about eight).

I would say the best would have to be either [i]The Shining[i]--I saw that at the tender age of nine. Meep--or The Shawshank Redemption. The worst is probably The Tommyknockers.

I saw Dreamcatcher. It was horrible. I've read tons of his books but not seen many of his movies. I saw Tommyknockers too. I was horribly disappointed when I saw Dreamcatcher and Tommyknockers shortly after reading those books, they both stunk. I loved the books though.

Dolores Claiborne was pretty good.

Hmm tough one. The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile are definitly two of the best.
Though I also really enjoyed The Stand - though that was more of a short TV series I suppose.

Yeah Tommyknockers wasn't all that good =/ Shame because I enjoyed the book.

Hmm, the miniseries was fine. Personally I'd prefer a movie based on The Eyes of the Dragon.

And Roy Lee is producing. Given that he's based his entire career on shoddy, dumbed-down remakes of Asian and European horror movies, my expectations aren't too high.

The 5 Best And 5 Worst Stephen King Film Adaptations - FEARnet

From the best list, I've only seen Stephen King's The Mist and The Shining. I wish the article writer included Thinner in the five worst list, but I agree with most of his picks otherwise.
