It appears that Warner Bros. is moving ahead with their planned live-action Justice League of America movie, with casting reportedly set to commence shortly for an early 2008 start date.

According to Moviehole.net, "Brandon Routh and Christian Bale won't be starring as Superman and Batman, respectively, in the Justice League movie -- but they will both still be starring in the stand-alone Superman and Batman sequels. So don't fret fans, there will only be a new Bats and Supes for the team-up movie."

Bale informed IESB.net that he hasn't been approached about playing Batman in JLA, adding, "It'd be better if (JLA) doesn't tread on the toes of what we're doing, though I feel that it would be better if it comes out after Batman 3."

Moviehole also reported that a "casting director for the movie will be onboard next week and it's then that they'll be going after their tighted strongmen."

UPDATED: IESB.net reports a rumor that JLA could very well be a motion-capture film a la Beowulf, Avatar and The Polar Express. This could explain the recasting of major characters such as Batman and Superman, as well as the reported early '08 production start. As the site points out, however, mo-cap films take a long time so a 2009 release seems highly unlikely now. Firstly, I'm glad Bale isn't going to be playing Batman; I haven't seen Superman Returns, although I'd imagine it's still a good move not to cast Routh either. Secondly, given two quintessential characters aren't going to be played by their current portrayers, I quite like the idea of the movie being motion-capture; should add a nice dynamic to the film while keeping the comic book feel.

I could never quite decide whether I wanted Routh or Bale in or not. One day I'd think yes, the next I'd have changed my mind. Ultimately it probably makes sense to keep JLA seperate, and motion capture would certainly give a different feel.

I don't like the idea of motion cap at all; espicially if they're using this movie as a starting point for individual franchises for Flash (which is doomed already with Shawn Levy as director), Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and Aquaman. It should be live action and exclude Batman all together; the current Nolan movies don't fit with it. Routh could be in as the leader with Superman as I think the tone of Superman Returns would fit with a JLA movie. That and I just don't think Returns was great enough on it's own anyway. I liked Routh as Superman and Spacey as Lex, but the rest of the cast was horrible. A JLA movie could be great to help make future Superman movies as good as the old ones again.

Well Atleast he knows the history of Supes, and well this seems like a step foward using him. I liked Smallville and his eventual turn into superman is good for me.

Has anybody seen the trailers for Beowulf? That's a CGI movie with angelina jolie and good god does it look REAL.

I read a thing today saying to avoid filling JLA up with too much fluff they're considering not showing Batman as Bruce Wayne at any point, and this would have a by-product of not needing to worry about the new Batman not being similar to Bale. That puts a new slant on the potential casting for the role and the extent to which mo-cap will be used. Especially when you read this:

US, August 30, 2007 - Rumors about the live-action Justice League of America movie are inundating the Internet these days, and will likely only get more heated before the Warner Bros. film goes before cameras in early 2008.

IESB.net has been the first outlet to report most of these rumors, which they point out are just that: unsubstantiated rumors. First, they reported a few days ago that Smallville star Tom Welling was going to play Superman in JLA, but that was denied by the series' exec producer Al Gough in a statement to the SupermanHomepage.com.

IESB also clarified an earlier report that JLA would be an all motion-capture production; they now claim that it will be partially mo-cap, most likely for the alien villains in the film. Speaking of them, the site also says the villains will include white Martians, the OMACs, as well as Maxwell Lord and Talia Al Ghul of the Checkmate agency.

The Martian Manhunter is also said to be in the film, with IESB claiming that none other than the voice of the Silver Surfer himself, Laurence Fishburne, is being considered for the role. Other casting possibilities mentioned by the site include "Jake Gyllenhaal, Leo DiCaprio, Jessica Biel. Mel Gibson is liked for Max Lord. Scarlett Johanssen for Talia. Bruce Willis was mentioned for Lex [Luthor]." Earlier buzz suggested that Batman will never be seen as Bruce Wayne during the story, which is why it might be easier for Warners to recast the role with a new actor rather than pay Christian Bale to do it.

Gibson is an interesting rumored contender, given his past relationship with both Warners and rumored JLA director George Miller. IESB claims DiCaprio might be up for Aquaman.
