I read a quote by Shaykh Abdal Qadir Jilani in which he said by the ruling of the shariah I am a wrongdoer but by the haqiqa I am correct. Which means for example, shariah may require me to grow a beard, but because I have pride and self admiration it might be acceptable by haqiqa if I trim my beard so that the opinions of others do not bother me and I lower my own self. By divesting myself I am actually becoming more beloved to Allah. This is temporary of course I can grow my beard again once I have been cured. The Sufis have used a technique to cure the love of admiration of others which becomes a source of vanity (one of the things that Tasawwuf is there to remove). One great Sufi had gone away from his home town and over the years had gained a great reputation as an ascetic and a Wali. It was Ramadan and he went home to see his mother. The people of the village all came out to see him and welcome him home with honour like a hero. knowing the danger of accepting such as welcome he took out a piece of dry bread from his bag, popped it into his mouth and began to eat it. They people of the village all got angry shouted at him, accused him of being a fraud and went home. Left alone he went to see his mother. What the people had forgotten, as he knew they would, was this although it was Ramadan - he was a traveler on a long journey - the fast was not obligatory upon him. Thus he had sought their blame, but had done nothing haram. I suspect that whatever you read from Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani (ra) refers to things like this. |

brother revert are you not the least bit intrigued by the path (sufism) travelled by Imam Ghazzali, Imam Adhahabi, Imam Nawawi and countless others? But, Sufi's come in soo many types and flavors in their practice of the deen. Some sufi's seem to be correct in their Islam; while other's practice haram and call it halal. |

Yes, of course; I have a copy Ghazzali's "Reliance of the Traveler" But, Sufi's come in soo many types and flavors in their practice of the deen. Some sufi's seem to be correct in their Islam; while other's practice haram and call it halal. if you listen to the lectures it should clear all that up as well as explain things the reality of the situation. |

Brother, if one found unluckily a fake Sheikh then he could realize that by time to time. Like, he won't feel comfort while sitting with him or talking to him. His sheikh won't come in his dream. If he would get upset his Sheikh will call him while no one has informed the Sheikh about his situation. There are many many things .... Leave me out of it |

Well, I posted my own experiences. It seems like you have never met a Sufi or didn't go through Sufism. Brother I did post this before but I deleted it for the sake of riya (show off). These features you wrote, for example seeing shaykh in dream, shaykh calling you e.t.c are also experienced by myself, despite I am not baya'a to the shaykh I sit with when I am back in my home country in Pakistan. The shaykh is although a great wali of this time, I hold no doubt. But remember, when you are searching for shaykh you should not expect this. There are certain guidelines which you should look over when you are taking bay'a. But although these experiences shows that your shaykh is kamil, and a blessed shaykh with these kashf. By looking at your shajarah I did not recognise what chain of order are you coming from, naqshbandi I guess? |

The "Bayat" itself is established in the Quran, and quite surprisingly for the women too, so it establishes that women can be "bayat". After this we depend on the tafseer scholars (commentators of the Quran) to explain the details.
"O Prophet, when the believing women come to you pledging to you that they will not associate anything with Allah , nor will they steal, nor will they commit unlawful sexual intercourse, nor will they kill their children, nor will they bring forth a slander they have invented between their arms and legs, nor will they disobey you in what is right - then accept their pledge and ask forgiveness for them of Allah . Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." (Surah 60, v12) |

So Brother XTREME,you got lucky and found such a wonderful Shaikh,Now pray for us too ( Me and Umar-Italy) My Shaykh even tried to "get rid of me" linking me to another Shaykh, but I'm still there! So rather, please brothers make du'a' that Allah grant him a lot of sabr to deal with me and my annoying e-mails! |

i was bayat to a shaikh in the past but i am no longer with him. what i have noticed with mureeds and some shaikhs too is that they give a lot of importance to, and wish to perform, miracles, fly through the sky, act all mysterious and pretend to have divine insight etc, and they give second place to having a clean heart, practicing the sunnah, having good akhlaak etc. they also act aloof from 'regular' muslims and look down on them. it seems that this is found not just with isolated groups of mureeds and shaikhs, but seems like the norm. saying that, i have met some nice shaikhs and mureeds, but they are quite rare. |

Uhm... I'm very happily settled where I am! OR may be he knows that your potentials are very high...and you are being spoiled with him.The first Shaikh of syed Adam Binori,told him in so many words....that your potential is too high for me,you need a better Shaikh like Mujaddid sb RA.So syed Adam went in service of Hazrat Mujaddid,and became what he became....! |

Careful you might make him big headed and delusions of grandeur, the nafs loves to be told it has great leadership potential and hates to be brought low. It is better to put it low and to make it do things that it dislikes...which is easier said than done.
May be your Shaikh(?) does not feel competent enough to handle a giant like yourself.Some Mashaikh are good at talking,but when it comes to real roohaniyyat,they are close to zero,such Mashaikh shy away from mureeds,and rightly so. |

Would you be kind enough to give a very short overview of this book, and maybe about the person who wrote it? Is it considered a 'central' textbook in this subject? Also to the brother who stated about getting 'Shariat o Tasawwuf'. Just a tiny overview please. I tried to find it on google. For me, it cleared up many misconceptions that I had about Tazkiyyh/Tasawwuf/Sulook and its relation to Deen. The author was a world renowned scholar who Allah made his writings pleasing to the sight and comforting to the soul. All translated works of his have that effect in my opinion. Easy to read yet highly academic. I can only imagine what one will experience reading his works in Urdu or Arabic.
