Good suggestion. I've been wanting to get mind-maps out there and I've experimented around with them too. But I really don't like the online/computer versions...I think if its done by pen-paper its best. It's more organic and gradual that way, its your own writing, so you are more familiar with it.
The reason i resorted to drawing mind maps online was due to the legibility of my handwriting. Creating it on computer may have taken a little more time than it would have taken to write by hand, but because i was pleased the way they appeared and how i could easily scan (read quickly) it, i decided to do it. Otherwise, writing by hand is as you mention the more organic way and the preferred option.

The current notes aren't exactly doable for mind-maps. Mind-maps are more a reflection of how we think. And the teachers vary in their style. Inshallah, when the notes near completion it could be attempted...it would be very crowded and clustered though, more like a big gigantic poster than a sheet of paper, so it would be tricky to pull off and require some creativity. Maybe when one is complete i could have an attempt ... let me know when you do and i'll try my best to incorporate all the notes onto a mind mind. Also, we could always use more than 1 mind map to cover all the points, but in a thematic order.

I guess mind maps are good if you have already heard the audio lectures.
The benefit of linear notes with substantial details rather than few words, is that anyone can open it up and read them to benefit from the summary of the lectures.

And Allaah knows best.

Anybody out there who is willing to assist, email me at muslimology at gmail dot com. I am looking for someone for Husain Abdul Sattar's talks...pick a year and do notes on all the talks in that year. Who has the himmah for it?
http://sunninotes.titanpad.com/1

Also, if anybody has "suggestions" I will only listen and consider if you promise to take notes on at least 2 incomplete lectures. Any general comments in this thread, from hereon, should understand you make a pledge to take notes on at least 1 incomplete lecture.

Alhamdulillah, I've been taking notes from Shaykh Husain Abdul Sattar's talks. Insha'Allah I would like to contribute with the 2001 talks and I'm currently working through the 2002 talks so I could share what I have from those as well.

[Edit 1: I just realized you have notes for 2001 already but I do have 14 of the 2002 lectures if you'd like them (they are handwritten in a notebook so I'll have to make some time to type them up). Also, I could share the 2001 notes too in case you want more.]

[Edit 2: I have notes for 2002 lectures titled Bringing Barakah Into Our Lives through to and including Levels of Submission. Once I type them up [edit...] I'll post them here insha'Allah.]

[Edit 3: If others have not already done so, I would like to commit to provide notes for the rest of 2002 and for years 2003 and 2004 as well insha'Allah. It may take me a while to get through them all but I would like to take those on Allah willing.]

January 6, 2002: Bringing Barakah Into Our Lives

2 goals attained:
1. Effort – whoever makes effort will get results (1:1 ratio expected)
• If you put effort into a piece of metal, you can make it fly (airplane)2. Barakah – when added to effort, the result is multiplied
• When a Muslim puts an effort but puts barakah into it, it is multiplied.
Ex. think about the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم‎ - within 22 years, he established such an environment that even today we are practicing Islam & thinking about him صلى الله عليه وسلم‎.
How many things last 1400 years? SubhanAllah!
How does one take this barakah in?
Follow in the footsteps of the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم‎.
Why is barakah in our lives?
Money goes further than a person with millions because connected it to Allah سبحانه و تعال.
Key1: Sunnah - you achieve barakah by following the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم‎. Everything he did was for Allah سبحانه و تعال.

Read Imam Ghazali’s books, especially From Error to Guidance

Sunnah isn’t just there for us to read about but for us to act on/interact with. Emulate the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم‎.
Key2: Continuous dhikr - secret of barakah

January 13, 2002: Taking Account of Ourselves

Ihsan – you worship Allah سبحانه و تعال as if you see Him & if you can’t see Him, then know that He sees you.

In the hereafter, believers will be given the vision to see Allah سبحانه و تعال

The reality is that Allah سبحانه و تعال watches us every single moment

The idea that this is happening – imagining that you are standing and worshipping the creator of the universe or at least to imagine that He is watching you.

Muraqabah – you watch/reflect on yourself

There are different forms. Take some time to reflect. The following examples help develop relationship with Allah سبحانه و تعال

Ex.1 Sit and imagine yourself before Allah سبحانه و تعال . You’ve got to present yourself and explain what you’ve done with your time.

Ex.2 imagine you’re lying in your grave and all the punishments of the grave and you know that all of those punishments have a cause

Ex.3 you imagine it is the DOJ and you imagine how you are now & if you are ready

Etc. etc.
Take account of yourselves before account is taken of you!

January 20, 2002: Understanding The Goal: Allah (سبحانه و تعال)

Distractions, inability to focus on dhikr
  • Get focused on one thing – a step to focus
  • Once focused, then start dhikr of Allah سبحانه و تعال.

In the west, our ‘black bull’ is academics

DOJ – we aren’t going to be judged by the ‘black bull’s’, we’re going to be judged by what is in our heart – Allah سبحانه و تعال‎.

The ‘black bull’ is just a step.

The next step is becoming a servant of Allah سبحانه و تعال‎.

The reward of is the same reward as becoming an aalim – get the same reward as an aalim

You have to understand what you’re doing & why – check intentions
Goal - pleasure of Allah سبحانه و تعال‎.
If you learn but don’t make changes in your life, there is no benefit.

It is not about reading & writing – it is about submitting and regularity of dhikr.

I can add those. The notepad is open so feel free to write in there directly or write them in this thread. Whatever you are more comfortable with.
