Re: Olympics

Salaam

There was a post going on about "Muslims in Olympics" which was deleted.

I do hope members weren't implying that watching an isolated event in the Olympics (e.g. Equestrian, cycling, archery) is "taking part in paganism" or "forgetting the boundaries between halaal and haraam". As long as that specific event is not breaking the law (e.g. all men, no 'awrah showing, no music etc., not distracting from salah), then I don't see what's wrong with it. It's the same as watching cricket or any other sport.

Wassalaam

can you post a link to one such olympic video (in full) which does not violate the points that you made.

Wassalaamu Alaikum wa rahmatullah

An example from last year's Olympics:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZGF8...feature=relmfu

I watched until 1:50.

One can argue that the practice of "bowing" before beginning the Judo is unislamic but it's not something intrinsically haraam to watch.

You're able to see women in the background and this is unavoidable other than in one way- not watch the video at all. Not to mention that if you wanted to watch it on tv, you wouldn't be able to tell when the matches start exactly so may turn on the tv and see some random woman presenting for a bit before the sports begin, etc.

I was focussing on the two men and their techniques therefore didn't notice any women in the background (even if they were there). It's like watching a car in the street in the distance, your focus is on the car but there will doubtless be women in background who will be in your line of sight.

I don't have a TV so wouldn't know who presents and what not. TV is obviously a great source of fasad and time-wasting no doubt. I merely watch the clips where a certain event is taking place.

Take a Muslim cricketer. Doubtless, when he is batting, he is focussing on the bowler. There will of course be women in the background in his line of sight.

But yes I do agree that it's better to stay away from watching if it's on TV but to brand sports haraam?

i watched it till the end.

i saw 2 scantily dressed women at the end when the winner was being cheered. is that acceptable?

women are not just in the background in cricket. many times the camera focuses on women in the crowd.

So then we all agree that watching Cricket and Soccer is just as haraam, correct?

its not about the sport itself. its all the haram that is associated with the sport such as the displaying of non-mehram men and women dressed inappropriately.

do we all agree that looking at non-mehram men and women who are inappropriately dressed is haram?

But yes I do agree that it's better to stay away from watching if it's on TV but to brand sports haraam? Spectator Sports are not like a show of warriors doing their moves in Islamic history, today it is a big business with promotion of corporate products, nakedness is promoted because it sells stuff. Most people sit around watching all this, buying things and eating unhealthy food and ruining ones wealth and health. All the sports people take drugs to enhance their abilities...all of it is fake show.

Brother - I didn't ask you to watch till the end. And no - it is not acceptable. It is haraam.

I don't think there is any argument there. Yes - it is haraam.

Big generalisations br. I don't disagree that doesn't happen with certain sports e.g. Baseball/American Football etc. but you can't extend that to everything.

NB: Don't forget gambling - which is one of the hallmarks of many sporting events (e.g. horse racing etc.)

the point is that when people watch these types of events, they will inevitably commit sin. there is no warning displayed on the screen before something haram appears.
