Maulana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi states that they were disbelievers (Fatwa Rashidiyya). However, this was only because of what was stated in some copies of Fiqh Al Akbar, which has now been corrected after investigation. The islam.tc link no more exists. Can you help me trace it so I can find it online somewhere ?
