Default Reading the Qur'an and moving forward and backward at the same time
Looks a bit strange to me! Is this Sunnah? Doesn't one get a headache, dizzy head, backache with all that rocking? You wouldn't read a normal book like this would you... How do you keep your eyes on the Arabic text?

It's not something I do - but if you can give me a source for it - I will start doing it.

,
It's not sunnah as far as I know. People have different ways of being focused.

Sometimes it happens naturally due to the rhythm but one should try and stay still with humility and focus on the meaning out of awe. Inshaa Allah.

I struggle to concentrate if I'm not rocking. This isn't just with Qur'aan though, any book I read, or even if I'm listening to a lecture, reading something on the internet or whatever I'm rocking on the sofa while doing it. Not rocking just gets me really uncomfortable. So when I recite Qur'aan I rock then too. Though I am fully aware it looks very strange and thus don't do it in public. Sister Salikah raised a good point which has been on my mind for quite some time in that you should try to stay still. I always think, if I could imagine myself in front of Allah SWT I wouldn't dare to rock while worshipping him, and yet not rocking really knaws away at me.

I usually end up thinking surely the important thing is I can concentrate while rocking so that is better (and not against Islam) rather than sitting still and getting frustrated while worshipping. I dont know, it's a strange one. I think I am an extreme example though since I rock in and out of worship.

You aren't alone in that brother, many people learn better or concentrate better when they are moving.

I understand that . I drove people crazy when memorizing from texts for college . Did more studying walking around and not on my desk. One habit took some time to get rid off is bouncing a tennis ball off the wall .

Movement in general, not just rocking but tapping a pencil, moving the chair, walking around, doing cartwheels, or whatever... movement.

Can we slightly rock back and forth while reading the Quran. Some people say we can't because the jews rock back and forth.

There is no prohibition in Shari'ah for going back and forth while reciting the Qur'aan.

Doing cartwheels? while reciting Qur'an? Lol.

A lot of people rock back and forth subconsciously when doing any type of dhikr. Its not a sunnah, nor is it impermissible. I try to avoid it, but still sometimes catch myself doing it every now and then. I dont want it to become a habit, it just looks weird to me.

Well moving forward and backward at the time of memorizing qur'an is good , i have heard hifz becomes easy by this procedure thats why the students of madaris engaged in hifz have this habit, but for other people whose intention is only to recite qur'an shareef not to memorize it, moving forward and backward may have no benefit,

Not sure why you feel the need to vent on such a minor issue and feel further that there is a need for 'a source' of proof of why people rock reading quran?

I find this strange when people look at others and make a judgement call on meaningless issues. One would look at people reading Quran and feel blessed to be in their presence as the mercy descents.

No offense to the OP, but what gabriel mentioned is very true.

Shaitaan traps us with meaningless issues often.

"Its like a person gets a chance to visit the king, but he wanders aimlessly in the Castle garden admiring it and misses the chance to meet the King."

It is not a meaningless issue and I am not making a judgement call. This is the problem. If we have instructions on every aspect of the prayer then reading the Qur'an as elaborated in the Sunnah is important. You will get more blessing if you follow the Sunnah. Reading the Qur'an was done many times a day by the Prophet (saws) why not a single Hadith informing us to rock?

90% SF is meaningless and we're trapped in it.

No need to be harsh. Maybe the sister is new to deen and has alot of questions? Why do we forget ourselves. Not everyone is a born ALIM.

Mehmood Ghaznavi RA had a khadim named Ayaz. He was very close to Mehmood Ghaznavi. Ayaz had a room which he used to visit daily. The other ministers were jealous of his closeness to the king. They told the king that Ayaz steals money and hides it in a room. Mehmood Ghaznavi RA had complete trust in Ayaz, so he gathered everyone and told Ayaz to take us to his room. Everyone went and inside the room they saw a pair of old clothes. The king asked him what is this? he siad badshah salamat, i visit this room daily to see my clothes and remind myself of what I was....
