There are a lot more than two types of Salafis and that in itself is a problem.

There are Salafis who are the rabble-rousers, who create fitnah and division within Muslim society. There are the learned Salafis who are more kind and accommodating. There are the Salafis who are pro-legitimate jihad. There are the Salafis who are pro-terrorism. There are Salafis who are against jihad (they are also wrong since jihad is not the same as terrorism). There are Salafis who follow their own understanding of Qur'an and Sunnah and then force it upon others. There are Salafis who follow their own scholars and don't force their understanding on others.

So, as you can see, there is a huge difference within Salafis. The problem is, the loudmouths who make a big fuss and are popularized by the media are also a branch of the Salafis.

There is a corrolation of those who gravitate towards salafism/lamadhabism and their socio economic background. Vast majority of the salafist in UK tend to be Pakistani (to be more accurate Mirpuri, Jehlami origin) and the bangalis (of shyleti origin).
These two communities are in reality the least sophisticated and untill recently least educated culturally or intelectually. Their children have objected to ritualised and village take on religion and opted for an extreme opposite literalist strain of thinking as a reaction. They have equated anything religious from their home country of origin as alien to Islam. The inferiority complex also fed this attitude and the adherent of the lamadhabist allowed them to justify their unruly,uncultured and somewhat brute view of life under the guise of religion. In essense there is nothing islamic but a shallow slogan of quran and Sunnah less depth.

I've found a different case in the US and Canada. Most of the Salafis/la madhhabis tend to be Arab or Pakistanis/Indians/Bangalis who associate with these Arabs. the efforts of Tabligh are great in my city so many Pakistani, Indian, and Bangali youth are muqallid to the Hanafi and Shafi madhhabs.

There are two kinds of salafi in Indonesia

- Hizbiyah Salafi. They are salafi that issued fatwa that making organizaton is haram. Ironically they make group (hizb), taqlid to their sheikh in Arabia, very proud with their "spirit of the corp".

- Non-Hizbiyah Salafi. They do not forbid organization. So, they established some da'wah foundations. However, they are not exclusive people who distance themselves from other Muslims.

I know personaly with few brothers from non-hizbiyah salafi. They are kind, polite, and even friendly. Sometime I perform salah jama'ah with them in masjid, behind the same Imam. I often read articles in their websites, and I didn't find 'dangerous things'. There are matters which I totally disagree with them, but I appreciate them because they wrote or told their stances in good manner. Once again, they do not follow madhab but they are not anti madhab.

Different than the hizbiyoon (hizbiyah salafi). Those people are really trouble makers. Spread fitnah to everywhere, insult ulama, attack the madhab, force other Muslims to taqlid to some sheikh. And force other Muslims to accept their opinions, if other Muslims refuse to accept their opinions, they call kafir.

They made Muslims in Indonesia very angry. So Muslims urged MUI (Indonesian ulama council) to issue fatwa to declare manhaj as-salaf as deviant sect. But MUI refuse it and said, manhaj as-salaf is not deviant, deviation is in the persons.

There was a case in 2009 which some Shafi'i brothers could not hold their anger. Then attacked the hizbiyah salafi houses, beat those salafi, dragged them to masjid, and forced them to apologize because they had insult the ulama.

Frankly, I saw something strange from one group in hisbiyah salafi. They often criticize and denounce Muslim who perform jihad or want to implement sharia, but they made some statement that clearly pro America or even pro zionist.

There are many other negative things from the hizbiyah salafi behavior that made Islam look bad. But it's too long if I must write in this post. May Allah give hidayah to the hizbiyah salafi and turn them into good Muslims.

Outwardly - probably the most adherent group to the sunnah. Behaviour wise:

And of course, there are good salafis out there too...
